Shane, I got some cuttings of the wonderful variety but now I'm having trouble getting them to root. It's very wet here in the winters but dry and cool in the summers. I'm renting so I plan to keep mine in a pot in my greenhouse so hopefully it won't be too much of an issue.

Oh ok cool, I haven't looked at the smaller ones in a while, I'll have to go give them a peek. As for the bigger ones those are up against the building on the other side of the cafeteria from where the younger ones if you happen to head over that way again.

I currently live in the Seattle area, but this September I'll be driving from my hometown in Eastern NC back to WA. My tentative plan is NC to Annapolis; Philadelphia; Cleveland; Indianapolis; Clinton IL; Riverside and Des Moines, IA; Ashfall Fossil Beds; Mount Rushmore; Yellowstone; Craters of the Moon National Park; and Hanford, WA. Do any of you have any suggestions for places I should check out along the way? Sadly it'll be too early for cuttings otherwise I'd throw some in my bag and see if anyone wanted to swap along the way lol. Are there any cool growers, gardens or nurseries? Or maybe just a restaurant or roadside attraction I shouldn't miss?

Ben, That's cool! And yea I'd def be up for trading sometime :)

Ione, I'm rooting a pineapple top too so hopefully I'll have one soon, and i just saved some seeds from a jackfruit and some longans so we'll see if i can get those to sprout. I'm so jealous of all of the people up here down in zones 9 and 10 haha. Oh and I just got a cutting of a frangipani/plumeria that I'm pretty excited about.

I built a small greenhouse and am playing around with tropical edibles which got me wondering what other plants y'all are growing? I'm in western washington and have bananas, a meyer lemon, bearss lime, a kaffir/makrut lime, a coffee tree, a mango seedling, and several types of ginger. I'm hoping to get a pomegranate, olive, and a longan.

Yea I got two that were the same as ones I bought from them last year and the unknown LSU variety :/ I'll stick to the forum I guess.
But my tiny bananas are cool. They have like 6 leaves and are only 3" tall. I can't wait to see them fruit :)

Elin, do you know what if Sbayi is a common type?  I really want one but I doubt I'll ever end up living somewhere with fig wasps.  Also, have you ever heard of Ghzali? I got a cutting from a guy on ebay in Palestine, but I can't seem to find much about it. I found a research article where they did genetic testing on it but they didn't say much about it other than that it's grown in Israel, along with some of the more recognizable names (at least to people in the US)

I'm going back to school at South Seattle Community College, and while walking around campus I noticed there's at least 6 figs. These two are big ones by one of the academic buildings and are covered in brebas, I'm assuming that they're Desert King, but don't know yet. There's four smaller ones near the cafeteria, but they don't have any fruit on them so I'm assuming they're a different variety.

Looks great Dan! I absolutely agree with snaglpus. Mine is 9' deep 13' wide and 7' high and I wish it was bigger. I can't wait for it to warm up at night so I can move my tomatoes and bananas outside to make more room for peppers and eggplants.

Now I'm jealous I pre-ordered mine in November and haven't gotten a shipping notification yet :( maybe they haven't gotten the dwarf banana I ordered yet.

So I don't know how well this would work where I am in the Pacific Northwest, but I was thinking it would be cool to try and get a group together geocaching the figs that are in parks, empty lots, or maybe even your yard depending on how friendly you are lol. With multiple people we could collect information about the tree in the notes and keep an eye on these old trees. What do you guys think? Just to clarify we don't have to be all in the same area though it would of course probably be more fun for people with several local fig nuts and warm weather.

Glad to hear everything survived! I know i sure would have been worried. We're having really warm weather out here in WA and I'm just crossing my fingers that we don't get tricked by a sudden cold snap.

For what it's worth I have three that I left outside in pots all winter (Kitsap county). I just mulched them with leaves before the handful of frosts we had, and have them against a light colored south facing wall. I had intended to bring them into the shed if it got and stayed cold, but it never did. They're starting to bud out now and so I've removed the mulch, and am just keeping an eye on the weather in case I need to cover them. (Just to clarify I have two that are real small tissue cultures I got late in the season which were totally mulched over, and one of them is a tissue culture that I got last spring which is about two foot high from the top of the pot to the top of the tree and is only mulched around the roots.)

I got the figs last year too but by the time I caught the in stock it was late in the year so they didn't really take off but, I put half of them in the greenhouse and those are growing steadily so I hope the others will grow as fast once it warms up. I figured at $15 it was worth seeing what I'd get.

I bought their (not rare) assorted figs last year and got Kadota, Celeste, Green Ischia, and Latterula. I'm interested to see what they consider rare, though I have to wonder where they're sourcing their plants from. Only time will tell.  Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 11.10.22 PM.png

Subject: Anybody got figs breaking dormancy? Replies: 105

I'm up in Western WA and bought a dormant Desert King that's 3/4 years old from a guy on CL. I'm renting so all of my figs are in pots and I'm pretty new to it so to prevent transplant/frost worries I put mine in the greenhouse. I put it in there the beginning of December and it broke dormancy a few weeks ago and the brebas are already starting :).   2.jpg   1.jpg
