Rc  thanks for your comment.  One is neglected, my cutting was 1” dia. with 1 summer growth, the parent was ¼” –3/8” dia .   The other at an semi abandoned  house may have been just overgrown, many shoots from the base.  Both new owners are interested in what can be done

Parent trees in ground has few late unripe figs , cuttings first year in pots are productive WHY?

I took cuttings from 2 different figs One was killed to the ground 2013 and 14, many suckers regrew, about 12 stems, some 12' tall,  all survived 2015 winter but this year bore a few figs to late to ripen.  This variety seems to be  identical to my 2 chi hardy and a tex everbearing that also bore figs as a  first and second year as did the first year cutting from the above tree.  The present owners remember the productivity from a few years back, the above tree  trunk was 11‘ in diameter and bore many hundreds of figs which the birds ate because no one knew they were edible. This tree is 200' lower elevation and is in an area that seems to have 3 weeks longer growing season.that I do. As a note I cut the many shoots back to 6, to see what happens next year unless we get another polar vortex -5 degrees.
A second variety is in ground that the former owner said froze back to the ground each year but regrew to bear figs late, but they ripened.  This year and last the parent fig patch,  ( now very neglected) had many shoots spread over 4' x 6' area, bore a few figs to late to ripen this year’ My one year potted cuttings all bore 3 to 6 figs each that ripened.  This variety may be brn turkey..
WHY didn’t the in ground figs produce?   The present owners have asked me and I have no idea why as I am new to fig culture.

There are sprays for rust but the ripening figs will also be sprayed and I dont know if it will all wash off.     Over half my fig trees are affected including 1 year old cuttings from local trees.   Those parent trees to date, show no sign of rust.  I have 3, 3year old trees and they seem to be somewhat resistant to rust.  Rust is contagious as my figs are close together and it seems to spread.  For next year use the forum search for rust, there are many comments.

acient3  by in do you mean as a dormant plant in a area that doesent get much below freezing or in a warm place to continue growing?
Most of the figs as celest can stand temp below freezing, 25 degrees above 0 is probably safe for all.
The cold while outside will start dormancy  then keep them in a cool area.   There are many posts on this forum on winter storage.  My opinion is not to try to see how cold they can take, I cram mine in an insulated area that has a thermostat set to 32 degrees.

Yes I have noticed that ci hardy is an excellent all round fig.  I'v only been growing figs for 3 years   but the ci hardy (2, second year trees) have produced about 1 doz each and at least that many more still on the tree.  2 tex everbearing  and an local unknown all seem to be the same or close to the same and are as productive.  The local fig lasted many years unprotected (11" trunk) untill the -15 degree polar vortex in 2013.  It has a good reputation as a fig for those of us that want productivity.  This is true for me as the only space I have is my driveway.

This may be a different issue, but the director of a department where I worked told me he had a place in his yard where he tried to grow a tree several times .  Each time it died   He called in a gardener who said his dowsing rod said that is a hot spot and trees cant grow there. ??  He planted one nearby and it grew fine.  I dont know that is possible but I have suspected that some spots dont grow well for some reason.  see if the pot plant will grow in the pot where you planted the one that failed. It would be interesting to see what happens.

I feel for you when your cuttings die. Many of us have been there.  As far as feeding fly larva the dry conditions might the flies desperate to find a place to lay their eggs.  you may have to wrap the tree in cheese cloth to block out the flies  or place bait (Figs) with tangle foot stuff to trap the flies or both.

the plastic tube is a diaper genie refill.  original use is to dispose of diapers with a continuous twist to seal plastic bag 20 ft long.  A stronger fan will operate a longer tube.  This one is surprisingly effective.

This is an ersatz AIR MAN made with a section of diaper genie refill.  Squirrels and all birds have vacated the area when it was on moving.  My small vertical strawberry  bed has been a magnet for them until now.  It should work for deer too as they are spooked by movement.

Cost , Diaper refill $6  for the fan  I used a humidifier fan A desk fan was not sufficient

IMG_0153.JPG  the zone you are in, zone 6 is only an average min temp.  Figs don't read averages.  A min temp of 0 seems to kill most to the ground . I'm in zone 7 close to 6 the polar vortex -10, top killed all unprotected figs (this is below the average temp).  Many want to push the hardness envelope but the effort to replace the fig trees or lose a year is more than  the effort to winter protect (I use pots).  I use a small insulated room in the garage with a heater set to 32 degrees approx.  Your dug out sounds ideal but I would add a thermostat alarm set to 20 degrees or a heater.  I think short season figs would be more use full.
I I have to enclose a pix of my EPIPHYLLUM they are like a weed but aren't edible

The cuttings have SIFD  "sudden infant fig death"  some varieties seem more susceptible than others. I suspect it is related to damping off in some plant seedlings.

With that many cuttings you may want to read the detail by lolita1234 on this forum as well as many others on plastic bag rooting.  I tried this spring, bags,  cups , clone machine and the bags for me were the most successful and easy.  Basically I suspect that if a fig wants to root it will, some are more difficult but all the various methods described should work if you have the facility and room.   The bag method was easy, compact , and successful for me.

you have SIFD   (sudden infant fig death)  there are many others with the same issue on the forum.  I lost most of one variety last year (my first year with cuttings)   also this year same variety and an another,  but the 7 other kinds side by sides did well.  It seems to occur a few days after they are watered, maybe root rot

A member here said she loved her fig tree and posted a pix .  It looked like it would be prolific and healthy.  At the school science fair a while a 6th grader planted beans, some she talked nicely to some, and to the rest,  she talked  mean to.  The former bean plants did look healthier. Her project didn't get any awards.  Along the same line the Farm Journal Mag. years ago gave bags of wheat seeds to some farmers.  They were to plant two groups  one to be prayed for, the other ignored.  At the harvest the ignored wheat gave slightly lower yield.  Findhorn Gardens and Secret Life of Plants are more examples.  Is some one missing a few teacups from the cupboard to write this stuff or what?   or maybe not, just something to think about.

liquid copper is not a product, copper sulfate is what you probably used.  ($8.00 per lb).  it is soluble in water and is an old and effective rust preventive.  To neutralize the acidity lime is added  One formula is1-1-50   1lb copper sulfate 1 lb hydrated lime 50 gal water.  also UC Davis mix at
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7481.html
this mix should help hold down tomato blight and was a common grape spray.  copper sulfate in a pond will kill alge and is used to kill roots in sewer pipes, I wouldn't use it as a soil drench or anything other than a spray on leaves, both sides  and branches.

winter protection
Without an internal source of heat the wraped core will eventually drop to the outside temp.  Because of the wrap it will take many hours.  dieback seems to depend on final temp, length of time at the min. temp  and wind.  I have seen many figs wrapped in NY, some did not survive some winters which is why some were buried for the winter.
I keep my figs and other non hardy plants in an insulated section of my garage with a heater set to 35 degrees.  I don't think outside wintering is reliable even here in Maryland.

Addiction may not be correct, an addict usually dosen't try to involve others in their addiction nor do they write about it on a public forum.  Its much more sinister  "mind control".  It seems to happen when a live, not dormant, fig is taken in to your home.  The end result is you must propagate the figs.  you cannot discard any cuttings from pruning,   You know the rest of the story as you read on the forum.

My fig inventory is 5 pots 2 years old going to 3rd year now, 4  1 year starting 2 second year and 6  varieties in the refrigerator now.  and I may have exceeded my available space.

chrisb9341   this observation may be of interest t you.  I have 2 figs in pots, both 2 years old last summer from Wellspring.  A desert king about 5' tall in the spring bore one fig , A lsu purple about 4' tall in the spring bore 12 figs both ripened by Aug.  nothing later, I didn't know about breba crop at that time  For the early figs the 2 year old LSU was productive.  I also have cuttings (many) from an unknown neglected fig at a unoccupied house.  The former occupant says the figs ripened by Aug (breba ?) and bore hundreds of figs.  The trunk is 12" in diameter, untill the polar vortex in 12 and 13  This year a few figs on the new growth (many suckers 8-9 ' tall), to late to ripen.  I can send cuttings when they root , last spring the cuttings did not root,  my other cuttings were 85% successful.  remind me in April if interested.  From the forum comments this may be a relative of celest.
No comment on taste as I have had little to compare , this year should be more productive.

What variety fig is that that recovers after winter kill like that.   Do you take cuttings before winter dieback?

This has to be passed on to warn others.

My personal experience is YES . note the following

My dentist opinioned how he missed the figs that grew in his fathers yard.   In short, I went  there  (walking distance for me)  met the present owner and dug a section of root with suckers out of what is now a weed patch. Potted a 2’ sucker , nursed it for a month and delivered it.  I couldn’t believe how excited he was to get that plant, Mind control?  Next I get a call from his father he found out about to fig and took it back home in the south.  Spent 20 min telling me how thankful he was.  Mind control?   Next son called “can I get him another  fig”?, ‘  I said yes because I should get 6 or 8 next spring from the suckers from the root I kept.  That fig was determined to infect the area with its clones. More mind control.  As I read the forum it apparent that those figs infect and take control of most humans who try to grow  them.  I’ve only had figs trees since spring of 2014 from cuttings,  My wife is accusing me of being in a cult,  I may have to go for  counseling to kick to cult.

OK Ill trade I have a probable chicago hardy   was 15' ht 8' diameter trunk untill the polar vortex 2013, again died back to the roots p vortex 2014  It sits on a west facing bank exposed to the n w wind and survived 15 years before 2013. Now 7' ht with many suckers from base.  the former renter brought in a few figs and we both thought that it was c hardy.  i know the owner and expect to get more cuttings.  I dont seem to be able to stop rooting these figs, they seem to have some sort of mind control, as you may notice from the forum.  Because this is so hard to root ill send a rooted cutting.  I have tried in several different ways to root 50 or 60 cuttings  i may have hit on the best way, I now have 6 rooting and with small leaves plus 2 from this spring. with my 10 of other varities  I don't have space for much else. all are 1 1/2 year or less old.

interesting and use-full post by Ross   I finally stumbled on some of the techniques you used.   I rooted several last spring, 2014 and again this spring, using potting soil mix.  10 cuttings 7 grew. I also had 30 from an empty house which I put in the cutting nursery with the other 10.  Of the 30, only 2 grew and were much later than the others.  since then I have tried 25 more in 3 lots in water and soil  mix during the summer without any roots or leaf growth.  In Sept. I took 6 that were still alive, but no roots and applied a small amount of cloneX as noted on this forum and used perlite and 20% peat moss, again as noted on the forum. in the rooting container.  all 6 are now rooting and setting leaves.  I'm going to try scoring the stems next.

The same failure happened to my cuttings last spring, 15 cuttings from 2 sources.  I ended up with 2 plants, im sure it was lo humidity as I used plastic bags to contain the moisture.   This year I used plastic bins, 10 cuttings were from last fall from the internet, 30 were  from a 30 year old tree that survived our maryland winters unprotected.  but the above ground part didnt survive last years polar vortex.    All were Refrigerated  untill end of feb , of the 10 , 8 rooted and grew  of the 30 that were cut at the end of Dec. (before this years polar vortex) from new growth that summer, maybe 2 will survive, roots and leaf survival were the failures, all 40 were  rooted in the same bins.    My conclusion is that rooting and surviving depends in some part on the cutting, as when cut, age of the wood,  possibly variety, and maybe more.  I also bought 2 rooted cuttings off the internet also both survived and all are now 3' high.
Final answer, keep trying.
