I am getting ready to up pot 2 small fig trees.  I am wondering if I can plant them deeper than the current soil level in my pot?  I am thinking the part that has not previously been in the soil will just produce roots because of the way they can be rooted from cuttings.  What say you?

My space seems to be much darker and leaves are much smaller and lighter green.  I have sent pictures along with my detailed question and experience to Texas A&M horticulture Dept.  They said they will have some answer with in 48 hours.  I sent it Friday morning.  I will post as soon as I receive their response.  Attached are my photos.

Happy Figging!

PS. don't know why picts are horizontal :(

I do not have any really sunny place in the house.  I live in a subdivision and the house faces west with small windows. :(

OK I live in Michigan and placed my 3 small trees in the darkest part of our unheated basement.  I watered them about a month ago.  I just went down again to give them a small drink turned on the light and all three have small leaves.  We have at least 2 months before I can take them out side. This is my first winter with figs.  Is there any thing I should do?  Count me surprised and perplexed.

Thanks for the input.  By the way the wood I am chucking is not viable.  Do I start rooting now or wait until spring?

I know there are many threads for this but I am seeking specific help.  I just received this tree and will be growing in smallish pot around 5 to 7 gal. in the end.  I think I want it open centered and smallish.  Also I want to give the large part of the cutting to my sister as a house worming gift I can.

The tree is 40" tall with one small branch at about 20" and a number more at the top.  I am thinking of cutting the tree at about 22" with 2 nodes above the small branch in yellow circle.  From what I gather new growth branches should form from the nodes below the cut (where other branches have been cut off flush with the trunk).   Then I can start choosing which ones to keep and shape from there.  Is this correct?  I am also wondering if I can root the top half that I cut off and what should be the success rate for this.  I am also thinking of cutting two small branches marked in red and trying to propagate them also as they are growing at a very tight angle with the center.  The peaces marked with a black x will be discarded as they look damaged and not viable.

Is this reasonable, doable or am I all wet?

I just received 2 trees from justfruits and exotics about two weeks ago.  Here is a picture of the trees.
They are nearly 48" tall.  They were shipped in the 3 gal. containers and were well packaged.  I have never ordered trees online before but I was very pleased with my dealings with them.  They were responsive to my inquiries before I bought them.  I emailed them 3 separate times and they responded quickly each time.  I bought an O'Rourke and a  LSU Improved Celeste.

I thought it was a fair price for the trees and shipping.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input.  That is what I thought OttawanZ5.  I wanted to be confident before starting and having a complete fail.  Figpig_66 thanks for the input on the cultivars I chose.  My plants should be arriving next week :).

This may be a silly question but I want to be sure I am not doing something dumb out of ignorance.
I will be growing my trees in containers and stored inside in the winter.  There are varieties I would like but they are not rated for my zone.  I am thinking this should be OK as I understand they are early ripining but not sure.  I am looking at O'Rourke and LSU improved celeste.  Help with my fig education would be appreciated!

Congrats!  I got my first tree this spring (Chicago hardy).  The folks here are very nice and helpful.  I had a few brebas and 2 main crop this year!  Much to learn that is one thing that makes it fun! Also there is no better fresh fruit than good ripe figs.  I had ONE about 20 years ago the guy told me he had to bury it in the winter. :(   Then I found out this spring that they could be containerized when I saw this one at the market.  Looking for many years of great fruit and wishing you will as well.

Dale.

Hello Mr. BronxFigs.

Thanks for your input.  I will be storing my tree in my unheated basement under a large garbage can to make sure it stays completely dark and should stay nice and cool.  When I got it I put it in a 6 gal container so I think it should be good for a few years correct?  Then I plan on up potting and maybe root pruning?  So do you think the small branches that did not grow much or at all but had green ends that looked like buds will grow next season?  I will be looking at the pruning forums and hope to find some picts of the different structures.  I actually have no idea which structure to use.

Thanks for the great info.

Vito. Are you saying if I stake the large (yellow) one I can pull it more to the center line of the pot?

I am in 6a in Michigan.  How long have you had your plants in ground?  What do you do to winterize if anything.  I have a small Hardy Chicago I got this spring my first one and did not think in ground would work here.

Thanks

I bought a Hardy Chicago twig this past spring.  It was about 12 inches tall with what looked like three small branches at the top.  One of the branches grew about 14 inches over the summer but the others grew very little or not at all but seemed to have green growth tips all summer so it is very lopsided.  I am wondering how and when to start training my tree.  I have attached a photo to show what I have and to get some advice on how to proceed.  It will remain in a container.  I am thinking I should cut off the middle shoot shown with the green arrow.  The one with the blue arrow had no leaves this year but has a green spot at the top.  Will this grow next year?  There is also a very small branch coming straight out of the trunk (inside of the red oval)  that I thought may do nicely.  Part of my concern is that the way it grew this year it will get so heavy on one side that will easily fall over.  My other thought is to cut both the yellow and blue branches and try to promote the small center (green) one to grow straight  up next year and hope the red one grows also.

Actually I have no idea how to proceed so help would be much appreciated.  Also should I do it after it goes dormant and I put it away or wait until spring?

Thanks fig oct 2015 mark up.jpg
