Hey I'm bumping this post because I'm wondering if anyone thinks that my mystery fig could possibly be an Osborn Prolific?

Nice collection. I'm jealous. I was recently sent some papaya seeds but became overwhelmed when I realized I would need to find a place to plant all seeds and hope for an intersex tree. My yard is only 20'×60' and I'm a renter so I need everything in pots. My large fig tree just happened to come with the property (and if I ever leave I am taking cuttings with me). Planted a blueberry bush a couple of months ago. Have some dragon fruit cuttings I've been waiting to root. Avocado cuttings too. Passion fruit vines. Trying to start a variety of peppers from seeds. This gardening passion is new for me and I'm very excited and having a lot of fun

Could anyone tell me what this is please? It's sunning itself on my tree. I really need to get the neem spray since the ants are still living in the old trunk.

P.s. Anyone here have a blueberry bush? I just noticed that ants are all over the small bush I planted a couple of months ago. Is this bad? I have noticed that some leaves look munched on and I know it's not snails since I use sluggo.

Maybe I'll try eggshells. I know that the beer thing works well but I have little dogs and I do not trust for a second that they wouldn't get into the traps. And unfortunately I don't have any fencing that would keep them out.

I seem to have a really bad snail and slug problem. Their are tons in my cordyline leaves as well. I have sluggo to prevent snails from getting on plants in the first place but does anyone know how to get rid of an established "colony"?

When rooting figs what I found to be more important is the proper dampness and quality of the soil mix and humidity level.
I've settled on using Pro Mix Bx mix 50/50 with Perlite, I seem to have less rotting or mold and an overall  better success rate .
Then again for some varieties I've just stuck the cuttings in the ground and had them take off.

This isn't actually for figs (which apparently root quite readily). This is for some other tree and vine cuttings, and to speed the rooting process for some of my harvested succulents.

So I finally got my clonex and whoa... did not expect all of the warnings (including avoiding skin as the product is transdermal). I wore vinyl gloves and then put the packet in a ziplock bag and stored in the fridge. I hope I did everything alright.

So I finally figured out why I have such a terrible ant problem. The red circle I've made in the picture is dead, rotting wood that houses a very large colony. I assume I can just spray neem and they'll leave? There were about 50 snails hiding in the nooks and crannies of the trunk. I got rid of as many as possible but does anyone know if they are bad for the trunk or just the leaves when spring comes along?

I also discovered that my tree is surrounded by cement on 3 sides. The cement was covered in dirt and weeds and even had some suckers coming through the large cracks which is how I didn't notice. The cement is pretty warped by roots. I hope that this doesn't eventually kill the tree or cause plumbing problems for anyone (especially me!).

Lastly, I finally cleaned up as much of the fallen, rust infected leaves as I could. I was outside working on the old girl for about 4 hours. I dumped a bunch of grape fertilizer (stinks like sour wine) and watered deeply. Just need to put my mulch down and I'll be finished for the time being.

p.s. a wolf spider tried to attack me. Gardening is dangerous.

While I've certainly done a bit of "guerrilla gardening" from city properties (picking a plum or taking a little piece of succulent from a prolific plant), I would NEVER go on to someone's private land and not expect to get shot. So rude. I can understand that some of the folks in your area might be hungry, but stripping a tree indicates that the thief will be selling for profit. I received some dragon fruit cuttings from a generous member here and after your post, I guess I have to consider growing it in the back yard instead of the front like I had planned. I don't mind sharing one bit but the fruit fetch a hefty price and I would be pretty ticked off if all got stolen and I couldn't enjoy eating any or sharing with friends.

Probably a weird question but will brand new roots wipe off the bark? I am trying to root a manzanita cutting and can't tell if it's rooting or if it has perlite stuck to it

Will send 5-6 cuttings for the cost of shipping which is $5.75 or we can discuss a trade for other plants or cuttings that are NOT figs.

Right now, the tree is loaded with clusters of flowers, so it does attract lots of bees. If interested, I will go out and cut however many you need the day I ship. Send me a pm. I also have a small plant about 8 inches that is growing from a seed. It would be the grandchild of my big loquat tree.

1.  Mexican Flame Vine (cuttings, no seeds at this time)
  • Perennial flower for USDA hardiness zones 9a-11b (lows to -6.7 °C or 20 °F)
  • Slightly colder zones can mulch and pray
  • Fast growing annual in colder regions
  • Full sun to part shade
  • Height: 10-12 feet
  • Spacing: 1-2 ft
  • Flowers prolifically with vibrant orange blooms
  • Blooms all season to first frost
2.  Texas Bird Pepper/Capsicum annuum L. (seeds)
Does well in a container, dozens of small flowers that attract bees

Does the flame vine irritate your skin?

How is the flavor of the bird pepper?

I don't use anything for shade except perhaps my fig tree at certain times of the day. Vine is growing on an east facing wall about 10 feet behind my 8ish foot fig tree I can tell you for certain that this blackberry bush is like the serial killer that keeps coming back in the movies even though you've hacked the hell out of it. If these can be grown from cuttings I am more than happy to send you some. Or perhaps I can find a little one growing in my lawn with some roots. I live in the east bay so it definitely gets pretty hot here. Luckily I am closer to the coast so I only get about a weeks worth of over 90 F weather.

I'm still interested in trading cuttings for non fig plants. I've realized that I am less interested in seed unless it's something totally fascinating (I admit that I'm a lazy and impatient gardener).

I am not interested in: tomatoes, onions, leeks, garlic, chive, vines with thorns, most anything with thorns, anything poisonous to a pack of dummy dogs. Vine plants that are susceptible to powdery mildew (cantaloupe, squash, etc).

I am interested in: stuff that works well for containers (certain bulbs or bush all the way up to a 25 gallon pot), succulents, flowers (will accept seed if they're fast growers). Artichokes. Stuff that does well in California.

I already have: one beautiful fig tree, blackberries, blueberries, a ton of succulents so send me a pic of what you would want to trade, dragon fruit cuttings, passion vine, mint, Kool-aid bush, lots of California natives, western white clematis, thyme.

I am very open to discussions of fair trade but my starting trade is usually 5-6 cuttings.

Thanks.

I can actually see one part of the trunk that's dead but all of those thick branches I have coming out are very healthy. Produce many leaves and fruit. Such a shame fig rust ruined her for this season. We'll see what happens in the spring. Fingers crossed.

The rust did severely harm my crop this year. The leaves dropped and most of my fruit became sunburned and rotton.

No idea how long it was left unpruned. I moved in a little over a year ago and September 2014 the crop was AMAZING. Hundreds of delicious figs. Then this past spring she got small red spots on her leaves that became larger and larger. The young leaves would come in spot free and then developed their spots. I'm almost positive it is rust. Leaves eventually shriveled and fell.

Mine took it very hard. The leaves dropped so fast that most of my fruit got sunburned and shriveled up. It was very upsetting.

Thanks Richie. I actually sent you some of my cuttings. This is "Antigone's Mystery Fig". I hope someone will figure out her type for me. And roundup doesn't kill wild leeks. Pretty much the only thing that does is boiling water and of course that will kill everything :/ But the roundup will kill the suckers the fig wants to send out? Good to know that neem oil actually works.

Hi there. So I'm trying to clean up the base of my tree from the rest of the suckers and blackberry roots. There are rotten leaves everywhere. How can I possibly clean them all up so my leaves don't get rust again? Should I just do my best and then spray something on the tree? Does neem oil actually work? I'm worried about using something toxic around my pets. Is there a certain way to mulch the base to keep away the suckers and wild leeks that I find so irritating?

Also, just sort of interesting - looks like someone attempted to cut my tree down twice. Second picture is the tree with my 5' shovel next to her for a size reference.

Those do sound very good, but unfortunately/luckily (I mean, those berries are tasty and the bees love the flowers) I have a very well established and evil blackberry vine that attempted to take over my entire yard, which is about 60'x20', this year. Just moved here last August so did not realize what was lurking beneth the soil. By the time I noticed what a problem I had, there was a small thicket conquering my South facing fence, new vines popping up everywhere, and an older vine weaving around my fig branches. Finally hired someone to chop everything down except for the original and still very large (5'x10') patch hanging from my West facing wall.
