Hmmmmm.  There is a slight possibility we have the same mystery fig.  I have a similar looking fruit on mine, and got it from a mother tree in Portugal.  Leaves look similar to Black Madeira, but they are a pointy instead of rounded.  It puts out a lot of figs that were not very good/not bad either, however I can sense some potential there and I'm sure it will improve with age. It had a unique flavor profile and good sweetness all things considered. The ripening conditions were very poor when the tree produced fruit and the tree is very young so I can't judge it fairly.  Will know more next year.  Here is the link to the page:

Good luck on the ID!

I have 2 strains of VDB, one that looks like UCD Vista and the other one with the long fingers and spade leaves.  If either of those is what you want please PM me... also have RDB if you need.  LSU Scott's black is not on your list, but should be. ;)

Did anyone without the wasp get some fruit from El Molino this year?  Mine are just in their first year, but dropped their fruit so I am wondering how everyone else's did.  I'm still excited about tasting it though... but the suspense AHHH.

I have a Alma from a couple different source.  One definitely has FMV, the others have no indication of infection.  Either trees produce very good tasting fruit.

I have 2 different types of figs with this name. One is like Dave's in the original post with branches having spade and long fingered leaves.  The other I have is thus far indistinguishable from my RDBs in every way.    I think someone mislabeled somewhere, but either way BOTH figs are excellent growers that produce WONDERFUL fruit!

It really is a great fig.  I was pleasantly surprised, especially considering that this was its first year.  Most trees get better with age, and if that is the case here I have a lot to look forward to.  Oh yea, it is already 7 feet tall so it looks like good grower in my climate

If you have time (several years) feel free to get a bunch of them, or start some from seeds and see if you get a fig worth keeping.  Its a gamble to see if you'll get a nice fig, but the odds are 100% you will not get a Black Madeira.

Tad,

I have no idea what kind they are.  I am in NC though and head to Cary from time to time.  Please feel free to contact me prior to the destruction of the trees so I can preserve a sample.  If they do well on Cary, then they may do well on the coast here as well. Also, please sample some fruit and post pictures and reviews.  I am very curious about what is growing over there, and that fig's eye is quite unusual.l

There is really no way to tell until you get the tree growing healthy. I will say this though, it looks like a fig worth saving! That fig wasn't ripe, but when you have a ripe one update us.

At this point I'd say just give it a year growing in the sun and post pics of the ripe fruit and dominant leaf patterns.  It could be a very common fig or it could be a very rare one, but in any event, from the way that unripe fruit looks it will most likely be a delicious fig!

Hey Navid.  I already have your UDG and LOVE it!  To me, it seems like a Mt. Etna type (because of its leaf shape and the fruit reminds me of the others) but it is its own fig that I would never give up.  However, it it important to note that even in its first year it has produced a lot of fruit, and MUCH better fruit than my MBVS and HC.  If I could only keep 5 varieties, this would definitely be one... maybe even if I could only keep one it might be it, but I don't want to think about that. haha

Also, your LSU RED is to die for when the fruit is dead ripe.  There is not much talk on the forum about that fig but there certainly should be! It is definitely a 10 out of 10 in my book. If I could compare to anything in terms of taste and texture, I'd say it is something like a super flavored IC or O'Rourke, but with its own wonderful personality. I would take more pictures of it but, like my Unknown Dark Greek, I tend to lack the self control refrain from eating them long enough to take pics. Thanks for sharing it with me.

Here is my fig story:

I have been eating figs since I was little.  I can remember going to Mexico with my mother and sister, eating the fresh figs from my aunt's garden.  For a while after we lived in areas where there weren't any fig trees available to the general public.  Then I moved to NC and found the old Celeste variants, a few heirloom varieties, and the BTs were pretty popular among southern growers.  It was wonderful having them again. I had a job working outdoors where many of my clients owned fig trees and many others owned pecan trees. Some days, that is all I would eat for lunch.  To some folks it was just nuts from the ground and figs that were destined to fall and feed the critters, but for me it was a meal fit for a king.  Eventually, when we finally became home owners we made sure to have a yard to accommodate a small fig collection.  I only have room for about 25-30 varieties. I haven't counted but I'm somewhere in that range... and my wife tells me I have too many. haha

Also, I am not looking to get in on your cutting give-away.  I just wanted to share.  Oh yea, Navid, please contact me in January so I can get those Unk. Antalya Red cuttings your way.  I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised by that one (wow). Mine was a little difficult to get started, but once it got going it did well.  Keep that in mind when you root the cuttings I will send.

In the meantime here are some U.D.G. from one of my first year trees.

Hang on to that one and give it another year. If you hate it, chuck it and send me some cuttings please.  While I can't be sure, chances are either you have a mislabeled fig, it does not do well in your climate, or it just it needs another year.   Mine is fantastic flavored and prolific here in NC and loves the sun. Very sweet, mild figgy flavor, a little seed crunch, and a touch of acid at the finish.

No particular order:

Olympian (Simply Awesome and easy to love.  if I could only keep one in-ground fig it might be this one)
Negronne (not the one that is the same as Vista.  Just outstanding.)
Nero 600M (From James... seems identical to my RDBs, but only in its first year... maybe it was mislabeled???? Outstanding, beautiful, great grower, productive, and full of sweet and rich goodness.)
Navid's Unk. Dark Greek (like a MBVS on steroids)
LSU Scott's Black (This is an Outstanding cultivar)

Honorable mentions:
LSU Red (sort of like a really good improved celeste)
Unk. Antayla Red ( unique and beautiful fig. Wonderfully sweet and mild refreshing flavor with nice jammy texture. I think this will grow in popularity once its shared)
MBVS (reliably yummy)
Hardy Chicago (reliably yummy)
Strawberry Verte (full flavor and sweet. perfectly balanced)

oh yea... and plain ol' regular Celeste... Im a sucker for it because I grew up eating them so its like connecting with my past whenever I take a bite.
Preto/BM not yet ripe

I usually eat the fruits from this tree before I get my camera ready.  This one miraculously survived long enough to photograph. This is one awesome fig! In 9 months it has gown to 7 feet tall and has put out a ton of delicious figs in its first year. If I could compare it to anything, I'd say it is kind of like a MBVS on steroids.  It regularly produces some larger sized figs, and this one is definitely on the small side.  One of the best tasting figs in my collection.

Thanks guys. Until its properly I.D. I'm calling it "Portuguese Black and Tan".  Its a large semi-sweet fig with a light nutty note.  It is a unique tasting fig with leaves and fruit production amounts very similar to Black Madeira. I think originally it may have been a seedling from a BM due to the similarities, but that is just a guess. I was hoping Francisco could offer some help with I.D since he knows a lot about the Portuguese varieties.

I'll get some more pics of fruit later.

The inside stays close to that color and the outside darkens more.  I believe it is called LSU red because it's red exterior.  Its a fantastic fig in terms of flavor, texture, and growth.

Here are some pics of a fruit from this first-year tree.  If the weather cooperates, I can leave the fruit on longer and it turns deeper in color and more rich in flavor.  Very good fruit, similar to a very good improved Celeste in flavor but definitely has its own character. 10 out of 10 for this variety in terms of flavor.
