I have been having great luck with a 70/30 Coco Coir & Perlite mix, once I up pot it, I use the entire mix from the original cup and then add promix in its surrounding.

That was my whole issue, my rooted cuttings in Coco coir , Perlite and my potting mix.  When I used it in my container trees in the garage, the meter works decent.

So the lesson learned and people should know is that if you are starting rooted clippings of in anything but dense soil, extreme caution should be made as the moisture meter may not accurately display the factual reading.

And here is a another tip:   Clean the tip with scotch brite pad, it works real well!

I always worried about crushing delicate new roots with my big fingers when testing in a small cup or quart container. I am sort of paranoid until I get them to the next level lol

The small probe is ideal for this.

Hey alanmercieca, after remembering about the scotch brite pad, I just tried the meter I have and it did work a little better, it works better after scrubbing the tip with the pad after each test.

Yes, I remember buying my PH meter years ago, it came with a small piece of green scotch brite scour pad, after every use, you are suppose to clean that tip well with it.

thanks again for the help!

I would say yeah, but for some reason judging by feel of weight does not work for me, I dont have a scale either.

For the experience fig grower, seller, maybe. From what I learned, when you think it looks like it may need water, wait a few more days. I lost many last year from root rot.

Hi alanmercieca, can you show me the one you have?  I just returned this to Amazon

I bought as a foolproof in not overwatering, especially at this crucial stage. I should return it but for $15.00. It's not worth it.

I dipped the tip into water and it read "moist" instead of "wet" totally inaccurate.

I went by the highest reviews, guess that is all faux too.

This water moisture meter is totally useless when growing cuttings, reading totally dry when its not and if you go by this meter, you will probably kill your newly rooted cuttings.

Waste of money....

Much like fig trees, if they die back to the ground, all energy will be spent on growth, this cant be normal and would believe they need extreme covering over winters.

I have my inground and every year it died to the ground over winter. This year I increased the quality of wrapping and hope it survives.

If it does not work, I may consider container growing it.

Thanks Doug,
I have a single 12 watt led lamp, first time using this.

I have a Red Sicilian that rooted about the same way, just waiting for a little more growth to up pot it.

One question, what size should I expect my fig plants to get by April?  I cant imagine more than three feet with artificial light and inside??

Great start, roots like that and those leaves are definitely going to grow.

5 Ft by August and at least two ripe figs before September 1st, put money on it with the above fertilizer stuff. No sip pots.

No stale water and having to water gives activation to the lime and slow release fertilizer.

Juicy and honey sweet, sugary.

Mike, I am afraid how big they will grow, since we are only in December, if they start getting too big, my backup plan is to buy a 4 tier mini greenhouse for the house until late Spring. Do you think I will have an issue with outgrowing the wine chiller? without real sunlight and Summer weather?

I just used this because I had it and it no longer worked, i saw good insulation and a tight door seal and the light bulb went off.

You can use anything that can hold heat and humidity, I very rarely mist them.

I first washed all clippings in a Bleach/water mix then let dry, I then slashed the clippings about inches in the bottom half with a razor in a few spots, then I dipped the clippings in Clonex , then I put the clippings in Coco coir and Perlite, about a 70/30 mix in clear cups, no holes.

As far as watering, last year I probably killed many by over watering, I just leave them alone now, even when they look a little dry on top, I leave them.

wish you the best of luck, I am positive you will have success

Hi Angela,
This year these are growing in my wine chiller.

I converted a wine chiller into a grow room, photos are here if you do a search for wine chiller. With temp control, it's staying at 78 degrees and with containers of water, humidity is over 55% and more like 66%.

I have an LED grow light in there, 12 watts and no above heat, just a heat Matt below. The light stays on for 15 hours.

I have learned to not be over confident with cuttings, if it makes it now, It will be in good shape

I choose this one because of a decent root and a decent amount of shoots coming out, if I didn't up pot it into a different soil medium, it would lack the proper condition for proper growth.

Thanks Coop,Doug has an awesome set up.

I think the more concern for me is my container figs that are in my garage not waking up. Just checked on them and it is 50 degrees in there!  never in a million years would I have thought that one day I would be shuffling large fig containers like this :O

Last year I had mixed results with my first attempt at "rooting" aside from just sticking a branch in the ground.

This year I decided I was going to convert my wine chiller into a mini grow room. The wine chiller was no longer functional since it was hit with saltwater after Sandy, it just was a place to keep my wine bottles.

This has great insulation, door seals tight and thought it would be perfect so I went for it.

Less than two weeks and I am seeing growth on two clippings. I am kind of nervous as we are only in December, I hope these don't get to big?!

you just may need to tie it down by the handles, just in case a strong wind happens.

Looks good though!  I did mine today, two trees, I am still able to use a 6 gallon wine juice pail. Lots of work, glad I started container growing ;)

Hi JT
I am also in Long Island and was hit with SSS, 4ft of water. My inground trees died back but since, they are growing well. One is about 13 ft and the other is 10 ft. I used a lot of chicken manure and lime this year and apparently the trees like it.

My tree wrapping   consist of heavy moving blankets, 2 inch Styrofoam insulation in a box, followed by wrapping in tarp.

When I uncovered/unboxed my trees this year, they were ready to bust out!

good luck, maybe we can trade in the future as I am looking for a HC
