Good info and thanks smatthew.

I'm not sure if he is talking about regular net pots since he refers to his local hydroponics store. These are Rootmaker brand air prune pots and I haven't been able to find them as cheap.

Wow that's a great deal. I couldn't find locally and don't have a business account so purchased online at retail and shipping was really expensive for over 100+ pots of varying sizes. Next time I need to order more Rootmaker brand air prune pots I will just place an order with you since you can get them at such a bargain. :)

For folks in the Dallas area, I have many Rootmaker brand 1-gallon round pots left over that I just don't need if anyone is interested.

The pots are new/unused and measure 6.5" ID X 7.5" D; 190 cu. inches; made from thick durable plastic. $4/each or $35 for ten pots. PM or email me if your interested.

I transplant my seedlings & cuttings in a mixture of potting soil, lots of perlite, and compost. After transplanting I lightly water it down with highly diluted Superthrive to help get it over any transplant shock and get it going. I keep the soil moist, but never wet or soggy. Light airy soil and good drainage is key in my experience - prevents wilting and root rots. I have had great success to date with this method. Good luck!

After repotting and watering with highly diluted Superthrive to help it get over initial shipping shock the Kadota seems to be fine as of this morning. The leaves are now perking up and looking much better.

I repotted the Kadota in light soil medium and watered it with highly diluted Superthrive to help it get over any initial shock. Will post a picture tomorrow on progress.

Received package from Brian today. Apparently USPS didn't understand what Fragile means when they decided to shove it into my mailbox today.

I was afraid the high clay content might be a problem as well. Now just need to get one.

I am no fig expert but could it be Lattarula which is a green fig with a honey-colored interior like you described. Leaves seems to also match from what I have researched. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Anyone in Dallas growing Peter’s Honey, Excel, or Kadota?  I understand some honey figs requires lots of heat (which we have lots of in Texas) to develop its sugars and character. How has it been working out for you? Are you growing in containers or in-ground?

You all made me laugh so hard I woke my wife in bed this morning. I told her I was going to make some coffee and go outside to smell the fig leaves to see if they would smell like cat urine. She gave me priceless look and went back to bed.

I understood the white sap (or white latex) to be a type of proteolytic enzyme, specifically ficain, which breaks down proteins and can cause a burning or itching sensation. Not sure if it’s true but I understood the ficain to be a defense mechanism to protect the fig tree from predators. Ingesting the white sap doesn’t seem like a good idea to me if can be avoided. As someone previously stated, best to use only the sides of the leaves, omitting the central rib, rinsing them well, and then setting them out to dry. Can't wait to try this out myself in the next few months when my leaves are more developed.

I would like to try my hand at a Peter's Honey variety one day as I like a more honey-like, sweet flavor.

Very interesting info & thread. I would never have thought to try this and will have to give it a shot this fall. Thanks.

Not sure about fig seeds but I tend to soak my seeds for a few hours and then direct sow them. I also tend to lightly spray mist the seeded area daily until they sprout. Has worked for me with great success. Good luck.

I wanted the roots to develop a little further and also haven't yet decided where it is gonna go into the ground quite yet. I may put it into the ground in early summer - will keep everyone updated.

Jo-Ann, I don't have any figs in the ground yet. The Celeste I got from Calloways which I transplanted into an approx. 5 gallon pot. Its got about a dozen buds beginning to open up. Will have to wait and see if it is truly a Celeste. I plan to put it into the ground maybe in the fall.

Hi.

My name is Edgar and am new to the forum. I am from the DFW area (zone 8b) and started to grow figs this year as a new hobby. I currently have two varieties (Celeste and Brown Turkey) growing right now in pots. The Celeste I got from a local nursery and the Brown Turkey from eBay.

I'm looking very forward to learning and sharing with everyone here.
