Subject: Fig cuttings to root - will this work Replies: 16

Tad,
Sounds like you are doing a great job. With the dome, is it necessary to water twice a day? You have to be careful of over watering or mold/fungus will grow.

SR Bill,
Here in Phoenix zone 10-11, seems like the Figs do better in ground. The following have done well here in ground.
VDB, Raspberry Latte have fruited well.
Potted:
Martencia Rim,Ponte Tresa,PeloponnisiakaAspra and CDD Rim have been growing well for 1st year.

Here in Phoenix, I think they'll arrest you for taking them. They have people that come and take down most of them.

If there is mineral/hard water buildup, you can soak in 50% apple cider vinegar and 50% hot water overnight. If the manifold is made of plastic, make sure the water is not too hot.

Sorry, could not resist. It's going to be 93/68 today. Beginning tomorrow the highs are only in the 80s,that are the norm.
The first time I lived in snow, I said "why do people live in snow"? It's probably what you say when its over 115° here and easily over the 100s in the summer. The only good thing is it a longer growing season for my Figs.

Andrew,
Thanks for the info, I will order some and some bone meal. My Fig leaves always turn brown in direct sun and the one under the front porch are nice and green.

I'm sorry it's called pro-mix hp. It's bagged soil that they sell at some Home Depots. I've been getting mine from amazon, make sure you get the free shipping ones.
I would place it in soil with a humidity dome or parafilm tape.

Dom,
I don't know when it starts getting cold in NJ,but you can always do it indoors. You have to worry about giving too much water and those damn gnats. Those roots look great, what did you do?
Personally,I would use 1" parafilm and place in HP soil.

The scammers have some rare Figs listed: Dall'Osso and Ponte Tresa. The buyers are thinking this is what they're getting.

My biggest problem is sometimes I don't have patience, patience and patience. I have to leave them on until the roots are nice and thick. And do not place in direct sun until there are more buds.

This is a really cool UK nursery that specializes in exceptional container trees and plants. I had to show everyone these fig trees

65 gallon
Ficus carica (Fig) AE03 specimen.jpg

They use drip irrigation with ferilizer, a coco coir based mix and mycorrihizae.

That's a huge container and I think that is not necessary for 4-6 years. It would be a big hassle to move. What a lot of people use are plastic 55 gal containers cut in half. Attached is a pic I saved from another forum member had found on the net. I think the point is you can grow large trees in containers.

I have about 30+ varieties. About 90% eBay and I've been trading airlayers with forum members from across the country. EBay Figs have been very expensive, but it was they only way to get the hard to find varieties. I have only been into Figs a little over one year.

Welcome!!! Seems like Jolly Tiger would grow well. It does not require much light, too much sunlight will burn the leaves. I've heard good and bad about the Figs. For looks it would look great for being variegated.

I know someone who ordered 35 rigato del salento seeds, but only got 19 whole seeds. Monica offered to send some more. When buying seeds, they're a crap shoot. You never know what you'll get. They're cheap enough to take a chance and are a learning process.

Update: I put an eBay ad up for not variegated Jolly Tigers. About everything was about the same as aforementioned ad, but 3 days instead of one and a pic of not variegated JT. Mine only sold for $30. The previous ones sold for $59 & $46 using the variegated pic.
Come to find out the buyer was interested in variegated. I promptly refunded.
Conclusion: I think most people don't know what variegated means.

BigO
Hard to tell what that is,could be just sun spots. The plant looks strong and should survive as long as the buds grow out.
My I-258 looks dead, the seller graciously refunded full price plus the shipping. Over 99.9% of my fig plants were shipped last summer survived. I actually thought the plant was too young and it spent over 24 hours in a hot postal truck. Which I think cooked the roots. Since it was only about 100 miles from me,it was trucked instead of flown. It was also sent on a Saturday.
