Dieseler, I am a Jill of all trades.... Ottawan, I would take up your offer if you lived closer..... Xgrndpounder, I think you are right... Yes, thank you Jon.  The figs were a wonderful treat!

My cuttings haven't been doing very well this year.  I moved the transplants to 1 Gal pots and all the leaves wilted and eventually dropped off.  I have them in the shade but they still look very stressed.  I hope they survive..........

You guys are too funny!

Dieseler - don't worry, you will get a chance.  Some day you will get a scion that has grown healthy roots at the top and buds at the bottom.

xgrndpounder - The golden rule is: all figs must pass over the taste buds first.

monkey546 - I think since the fig has righted itself it should be okay. Jon probably knows what will happen..... When I transplant it I will just cover up the original scion, and tilt it so it starts growing straight up.

Jon - if you want to use this photo for what not to do in your "Growing Tips" you may.

Can you post a picture of the inside of a ripe fig?

Thanks.

At first glance I thought it was an unendowed male fig, but at a closer glance it looks like a twin within a twin........

Please upload a photo (fig cut in half) when it's ripe!

Herman,

143-36 was a total surprise.  It was large, sweet and light (it didn't have a heavy texture).  I can't wait to get my own tree.

Harvey, seems to me you were smiling the day I met you...... must have been all the figs.

Harvey,

I had plenty of Zidi figs. They tasted very good and the tree is full and beautiful.  Every time I walked by the tree I thought, "What a beautiful tree."

My favorites from that trip were 143-36, Marnbout, Flanders, and of course, Black Madeira.

BTW, nice pics in the Fruit Gardener.......

I must be experiencing "Beginners Luck" (The middle cutting has three little figlets on it).  I've been trying to come up with a reason why I NEED another BM to go with my three new cuttings, but I haven't thought of it yet............

BTW Vista sucks.  I don't know how to make the photo bigger.  Maybe Jon can fix it.

The one that I am having difficulty with is Yellow Neches.  I have 2 in 1 Gal pots, but they don't have any leaves; roots are fine just no leaves.

Out of 22 scion from UC Davis, 19 are already in pots while 3 are still in vermiculite growing roots.  That has to be beginners luck.  I didn't realize I would wind up with so many fig trees...........

I received 3 scion of BM from UC Davis in the middle of March.  All 3 are in 1 gallon pots and doing as well as the others.......  Must be beginners luck.

Just my opinion, but I would think if Tony and Stephanie were causing a burden to this site Jon would shut them down.  I went into the chat room to see who was there and I was all alone.  Does anyone else hang out in there?

Just imagine, these 2 might come up with the winning essay for the Black Madeira, grow it into a huge tree, and get motivated enough to become the next Jon V.  You just never know.........

This was my first experience rooting fig cuttings in a bag.  Out of 24 cuttings only 3 or 4 became moldy.  Every Sunday I would rinse each cutting off and replace the paper towel.  I also blew up the bag with my air.  Several times during the week I would open the bags and put some new air in.

The few that became moldy I would rinse in plain running water, and wrap in new paper towel.  They all produced roots and were transplanted into clear cups with vermiculite.  Now, it's back to waiting.......

Wow!  That would be enough information for an entire book!

I would like to see a "What is wrong with my fig?" section with photos that show the problems that fig owners encounter, and the solutions to fix them.

Another section on how to protect the fruit from birds and bugs etc. would be nice.  There must be a variety of innovations out there that people use to protect the fruit.

Something about identification (or the difficulties of), and genetics would be cool.

A Vocab page would be awesome.

I like this new version.  It is orderly and easy on the eyes.

My only recommendation would be to put the fig leaf graphic in the empty squares where photos are not available.  The thin black line without a picture makes the entry look unfinished.  Another option would be a black square with "No Photo Available" in white lettering.

Other than that, it looks great!

My choice would be number 2.  I like the simplicity of the plain words separated by a vertical line at the bottom of each variety, and the color change when the link is loaded.  I'm not particularly fond of the green/purple combination but it is clear when more info is available.  I would keep the dark green and choose a light green similar to the background when the link is empty.

Just another opinion........

Jon,

Once you pot the cuttings in vermiculite, how long before you see visible roots on the side of the cup?

How long do you keep them in vermiculite without any visible results?  In other words, at what time do you just give up and throw them away?

Thanks for the info.

I like your latest version for pictures.  The thin green lines help define the boundaries of the photos.

The "a" version is easier for me to look at.  I, too find my eyes straining to focus with the black background.

I've just trimmed my new Black Mission fig tree.  If anyone is interested in the cuttings, let me know.  It was a tree branch that grew into the ground and my friend dug it up for me.  He received a cutting over 35 years ago which grew into an enormous tree.

Hello Everyone,

I have checked A through D but wasn't able to complete all the testing.  I couldn't check all the thumbnails to see if they linked to a full-sized photo, or the footnotes to see if the link was good.  If the link was broken my Internet Explorer, and ocassionally my laptop would lock up.

Can anyone check the photos and footnotes for A through D?

Thanks.

Hi Gorgi,

I did read Jon's post.  It says, "Eventually, I am going to ask everyone to take one letter of the alphabet and test all the links for that letter, so we can debug all of this. But I have to get all the links changed to the new format, first."

He writes "eventually" he will ask for help, "but" he has to get the links changed first.

So, when he is ready, I will help.

Jon,

How long are your cuttings in this photo?

Another question for Jon:  When do you anticipate receiving the cuttings from UC Davis?

Thanks.
