Yes, it is raised up on a VERY nice pedestal,, a lucky thrift store find.  Iron legs and all.  I told the custodian when the tree is tall enough to stand on its own, the stand belongs in my home!!

I'd be mad too, but, how do you grow a lime tree?? I've never seen seeds in limes, only lemons.  I've planted lemon seeds and have trees, although I've never gotten fruit. That's a whole new topic.

So do I, but, at least I will have cuttings to grow and use for practice. My goal is to produce a lovely tree like the one pictured above.

No, I did not.  It certainly would've made things a bit easier.  I transplanted the tree at church in the upstairs lobby, so, water was the last thing on my mind.  I will remember that for the next time.  Thanks for the tip.

The deed is done!!  This tree has been named "Timothy Lazarus"

I didn't get the plant centered, but, it is straight.  Next transplant, I'll make sure of it.I did get the suckers off and planted.  I'm not sure why the pictures came sideways.  I did hold the tablet correctly. 20160201_110109.jpg  20160201_110140.jpg  20160201_111037.jpg

First of all, that picture of that fig with the large leaves is beautiful !!! @^@

And, yes, he's had figs on it before.  I cannot say that I know the shape of the tree before now, as I've not been in his office.  But, since it's never been trimmed, it looked nothing like this one pictured.  I do plan to try my best to bet it in order, though.

Also, the tree lives in his church office in a south west window.  It has never been moved from that spot ... except to go from on the table to the floor.

Around 7 years ago, I gave my Pastor a fig tree.  It has grown from a cutting to its present height.  Although it looks spindly, it is still living and has grown buds already,,, before spring.

Pastor is concerned and wants to make sure it doesn't die.  How can he make sure it grows branches and leaves and continue to produce figs??

Should it be pruned?? If so, how much??  The first thing I plan to do is straighten the stick that's holding it up.  Any more help is more than appreciated. 20160127_130615.jpg

OttawanZ5,

I was referring to the fact that the small tree appeared beside the "stalk" as being luck.  Perhaps that would happen anyway.  I live in Ohio, and had the original tree in a pot on the front porch during our warmer weather, took it inside when it got cold.  That's when the leaves fell off one by one.

rafed,

I use seeds because I like watching the pots and seeing the small plants come forth.  Must be the science teacher in me. ;-).  It's not about the money at all.  I did start (or attempted) olive seeds I'd gotten from ebay.  Did so in my classroom.  I remember when one seedling sprouted last December, the students noticed before me and were so excited.  I ended up giving that small tree to one of the ministers who visited my sister who was in a coma at the time.  He had gone to pray for her, she woke up an hour later, my brother was at the hospital and told me time....it was the same time the student noticed the olive seed had sprouted!!  So, I have Pastor Dan that seedling.  Sadly, my sister passed on Jan 5th 2009, but, I take comfort knowing she is in a much better place.

nhardy,

The fig and figlet (I love that word) is sitting in a westward.  That's the best window I have.  There is a pole lamp nearby that I could put a grow bulb into, thanks for the suggestion.

Italiangirl74,

Thanks for the reply.  I need to look for your website.  I know I am such an amature (sp?) and is doing this for simple joy.  I've always loved plants, even as a child.  My mother was amazed at it.  I tried to plant everything.  I give plants away, sometimes to my middle school students, if I'm confident they will take care of them.    I will email you privately.

Thank you everyone who replied or even read this post.  I'm glad I found this forum, spent alot of time reading and just recently submitted something.  Everyone enjoy your holidays!!

Or perhaps I just dont' know what I'm doing, which is certainly the case.  I'm a person who likes plants, and decided to try and grow plants in my home that I've read about in the Bible.

I've tried planting olive seeds from ebay purchases, not much luck in a couple of years, only 2 trees have come up and only one very small one is surviving.  I also planted seeds from pomegranates and dates which are doing well.

I've started fig trees from cuttings which were given to me, gave one tree to my Pastor for his office (he confessed the staff didn't water it in his 2 weeks absence.....) and I have one at home.  Mine at home dropped all the leaves, but I kept watering it.  A new tree has sprouted along side the bare trunk.

I'm so excited, or should I be???  I'm not interested in the fruit, just having Biblical plants in my home.  I guess I should get books from the library and study.

I received a number of cuttings from a member (Chills), he was kind enough to get me started in growing fig trees.....alas I'm such an amature, I'm not one especially looking for fruit, but, for the plant itself.  I have only one plant left.  (sad face).

I don't like bidding, and only saw bids on ebay.  Is anyone interested in selling some cutting?

Also, I planted some fig seeds from figs I got in the grocery, don't think they could be considered fresh as the figs were in a plastic container.  Anyway, they did come up and those little things are as thin as thread!!!  Very interesting.

But, again, if anyone has some for sale, I'm interested.

Thanks.

Hi!

Where did you get your Fratoio olive tree?  Did you start from seeds, cuttings or purchased the tree from a nursery?  Spring is coming and I'm feeling the urge to get new plants.  I've looked here in my city and the nurseries and greenhouses just don't have anything.

Thanks.

Wow, there is so much to know and learn about all kinds of trees.  I'm just happy to stay at the "kindergarden" level and have the 2 types of trees in my house!!

Thanks for explaining everything to me, it is all good to know, and I"m glad to know that I can one day have an olive tree in my backyard as well as in the house,.....if I'm lucky!

Hello, OttawanZ5,

I didn't know olive trees would survive outside in Canada....shows my lack of geographical and climate knowledge, I guess.  If I could grow olive trees outside too (Ohio), that would be great!!

Sorry, guess I need to find an olive tree forum also.  ;-)

Your alot like myself.  I grow figs for the fruit of course, but its more than just the fruit for me, they are memories mostly for me growing up.  More nostalgic, I hope thats the right word.  Ciao.

I feel like I'm out of my league.  I just want to have certain plants in my house.  I have a nice lemon tree I started from seeds.  It's as tall as me,  (5'-2").  Since I live in Ohio, I put it out on the front porch in the summer,  It loves it there then I take it inside in the fall / winter.

I teach 6th grade math and have 2 smaller trees (12" each) in my classroom.

I want to grow a fig tree and an olive tree since they are mentioned in the Bible. I just want to bless my new house by having them.

You guys sound like such experts.....cuttings, dormancy, zones, seasons and so forth.  I'm not looking for fruit, just to have those 2 trees in my home.  I tried planting olive seeds, but no luck.  A whole year now, and nothing has come up.  Perhaps I'll try to plant fig seeds and see what happens.
