Welcome to this forum, I am a Bay area resident, I you wish to connect send me an email. I have an few fig trees still young, you have quite a few choices of figs to grow, some will do better depending on your location/micro climate....Panachee was doing very well last year in Napa but not in south San Francisco.

Salut Thierry,

How does the taste compare with other figs,  with a Saint Jean perhaps ? St Jean taste like a Celeste I have tasted, Saint Jean is said to be a Celeste or vice versa. Nice fig.

I am ok with figs having different names, once I get my list straight  :) ?,  what I was proposing is that we pay more attention to the spelling, that we can control individually.

Dear fig collectors,

We can all help clean up some of this fig naming mess, incorrect spelling of fig names by doing a quick search and asking on the forum,  yes thank you for asking " GINA". The ones I notice are the french ones of course and  sometimes make the same errors with figs from other countries. We are a diverse group , we can help each others,  we need to question when we see multiple spellings for the same fig.  The point is to become aware , mistakes will be made, no problem, so long that eventually we know what the correct spelling is.

As far as the naming of the figs,  in France there are different names  for the same variety as well, for example :"Madeleine blanche des deux saisons" is also called "Jaune d'Argenteuil". More often than not it is a  descriptive regional appelation.

I hope no feathers are ruffled, my intent is to help in the simplest way and mind you I make mistakes as well even in french!

Yes satellitehead,   I agree, I started a batch 4  weeks ago, kept them around 60 degrees, no mold, no problems, they are growing beautifully,  anyway there is no rush we are only in february there is plenty of time. A couple years ago I started in Dec-Jan, had cuttings everywhere, in the kitchen, the bathroom the bedroom closet, ended up loosing many to mold, spindly green growth and the darn gnats.
Now I wait or start  them in a cool environment. Les stress and more success.
All the best

It was a real  pleasure to meet Sue, Jon, and Dennis for the Davis tour. We ate of course countless figs and after a while had quite a sugar high!

This year some of the figs that stood out where the Hative d'Argenteuil, dark red, jammy, my favorite that day, usually the V de B is with the winners but this year it was not at its peak yet. As we were getting started Dennis and I were pleasantly surprised by the Excell as well which often gets lukewarm reviews. Other delightfull ones,  the Celeste  and the San Pietro, very juicy and good flavor but not a pretty fig.

I met someone who has  relatives in that area. Of course I asked about figs ,  they said   that the figs in the area  are incredible. I thought that it was  a particular fig but it seems there are various types  growing in the area, not just one variety called Bludan. Some of the  figs in your collection  might actually be growing there.

Hi Maggie,
Travelling  at night temperature is cooler and often less traffic. I do not know the distance or  if you can do it in one night?
If you have familly or good friends there may be you can move some trees now  before it gets too hot. I sometimes think of moving out of this area and see myself on the freeway in a truck with all my figs as well.
All the best

Subject: What are the best fig varieties for Ca, Bay Area zone 9 ? Replies: 4

Hello Figarita,
I am zone 9 in Menlo Park, Started a year ago ,I am trying every fig I can get, . In the Bay Area we have a lots of micro climates as you probably know, cool summers with fog by the ocean and high heat in the Mission or East Bay  for example, the same day, so you have to know your climate well if you want to be precise with your plantings.
In Menlo I plant everything in containers , no choice , just have a back yard and a balcony, it's regularly warm/hot from now till oct/nov, so I hope to have enough heat for a Panachee for example.
A Mission fig gets quite large so ground would be more adequate for it to reach its full potential, , an Ishia green/black should do well in a container.Other factors are what size container can you provide, are you able/willing to root prune regularly, adjust your growing medium ....

All I am asking is: does your Madeleine  or Grise have some leaves as shown in the pictures.
I realise in some parts of US or the planet it is still early and  the figs have not leafed out.   Thanks

I found this site ,but I am wondering if the leaves are actually well matched with the fig. For example the Madeleine des deux saisons and the Grise de Tarascon. The leaves shown are not what I had expected , I am aware a tree can have and often has different shapes of leaves, however I do not have the experience to distinguish wether the pictures are acurate or not  So I am relying on you to enlighten me.
Thank you,  Joseph

Subject: Newly rooted cuttings and Fungus Gnats as killers? Replies: 4

Hi Ottawan, I was aware you had some questions but could not answer right away.
I am not 100% sure it is what is called fungus gnats. Attached a picture of some dead ones, may be someone can identifie them. They are very small, much smaller than a fruit flie. They flie slowly , can be catched in flight and usually go to the window. When I spray the surface of the growing medium you can see 3,4 scramble out from under/in between the perlite, turface or whatever mix there is.
I also found the surface covered by a very fine web holding on to the perlite turface, very much like the web from spider mites, but I do not  see any spider mites and the leaves have no web. All this happened when aI was handicapped after my shoulder surgery so I was not on top of things.
Dan certainly has a point, the figs might have been degrading and become  a host to the flies. I now question my timing and lack of good environmental control (light, temperature, moisture...)

This "Los Lunas" cutting outperformed all others. I was short and thick, could only start it laying down, in a mix roughly 50%perlite and 50%turface .It was put in the mix on November 16, set on top of the fridge, where the temperature is mostly around 70-75,  once it got started I sprayed it lightly 2-3 times a day , now I moved it closer to a window, early  morning sun. Wish all my cuttings would be so eager, of course some of my others are slower, a couple even roted !! some do very well. , After what were  mostly failures  last year, this is very encouraging and hope this will encourage others.
Thank you Jose for this winner cutting

Greetings to all of you.  This is a great forum!
I am a "newbie" fig enthousiast and full of questions that you probably had when you got the fig bug.
I read about dormant cutting rooting but what about cuttins from growth in April to September .Do you get good results, what is the most effective technique, do you need to use the baggie method, let the bottom callus under refrigeration or in a bag in a warm place.
May be "just stick em in the dirt"?...
