Angelo,

Will's advice is good on protecting the cuttings. My friend just hid the cuttings in his luggage and was fortunate not to have an issue. I don't think you can have a tree shipped. It must be imported which is a long process. Others here on the forum have experience with importing and could better explain what's involved than me. Best of luck.

Hey Gang,

Good to hear from you as well. Sorry I haven't been around much. Work keeps me very busy and I'm on business travel very frequently so I'm not often around and haven't had much down-time. I hope to find some time to see what everyone has been up to and to share some nice pictures, etc.

My figs are all out of storage now but they haven't started to bud yet because it is still too cold. It looks like the weather should turn this week in NJ so they should be growing nicely in another week or so. In the meantime, I've been nursing some vegetable seeds under my grow lights ... I've got zucchini, eggplant, tomato, sweet red peppers, red onion, cantaloupe and radishes all sprouted and growing nice. I've moved the first of these outside this past week. I also planted about 25 strawberry plants that I'm looking forward to enjoying. I got an early start on the garden this year ... Ok, actually I was just getting frustrated with the long winter, got impatient and started very early. Lol.

I hope everyone is doing well. Spring is coming on very slow here in northern NJ. We had snow last week and some still remains on the ground. Despite the weather, I have brought all my figs out of storage and have a few plants available if you are interested.

Dormant (will not be for much longer):
San Piero
Ventura
Martin's Unknown

Growing (from winter cuttings):
Sal's (EL variety)

If you are interested, please send me an email (not private message). Thanks.

Bob,

Neveralla and Sal's did the best for me this past year. I have had luck with Celeste and Martin's Unknown. Armenian did well for me also but needs a lot of heat. I have a few unknowns that have also done well.

Paradiso, VDB and Atreano sprouted really early, grew well, but I did not get figs this year but these plants are young yet.

The Fico Trojano I have was brought to me by a friend from Italy last summer. I kept it growing over winter and it produced figs several times through this season. It grew like crazy but unfortunately it kept dropping its figs. I expect it will do well after a proper dormant period this winter.

I have a few other varieties that I hope will give me figs next season, otherwise out they go! LOL.

Hi Martin, I hope all has been well with you. I agree about the Sals, best grower I had this year and made many figs. By far the best tasting one I've had. They grow like weeds too! I had a lot of wood from my 2 trees after I cut them back. I left some of my other varieties untrimmed to see if I could get some figs off them ... I was disappointed by a few of the varieties I still have. Next year will be the third season for some, if they do not start to produce, out they go! I'm trying to get the collection down to a few favorites that do well in northern NJ, then I'll stick with those. Best of health!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I was able to take advantage of yesterday morning to trim my figs and get them stored away for the winter. I finished before the first icy snow of the season started. No accumulation to speak of but it was a reminder that winter is here! I cut-back my potted figs before storing them and have cuttings available for anyone who is interested. I have them in bundles of 3 pcs each for $5 and $5 shipping (I can combine shipping for small quantities). I have:

- Sal's (EL)
- Fico Trojano
- Neveralla

All were vigorous growers and producers this year.

Please send me an email (not a private message) if interested.

Reposting offer with a better subject title:

I have a bunch of 1 gallon plants from winter cuttings that are now mature enough to ship for anyone interested and who didn't get any from my last fire sale (LOL). I have about a half dozen or so each of Martin's Unknown, Aldo, Ventura and California Brown Turkey. Pictures are below. They all can be shipped in their pots, growing well and hardened-off. I'm asking $20 plus $10 shipping each by UPS Ground. I'd go to $15 a plant for 3 or more but the cost of boxes and shipping is the same as they will ship individually.

Please send me an email (not a private message) if interested.

All,

Sorry I've still been scarce on the forum. I lurk around on occasion as time permits with my heavy traveling schedule. My relocation is still up in the air but have successfully brought my collection down by half to a more manageable 15 or so varieties. I hope everyone who bought my plants are having good luck with them.

I have a bunch of 1 gallon plants from winter cuttings that are now mature enough to ship for anyone interested and who didn't get any from my last fire sale (LOL). I feel the same Marty, everything looks so barren now without the figs to look at and care for. It will be a long winter. I think this spring I will thin out the collection ... too many to handle.

The top of the soil is cover with much that is a little dry, but the pots were very heavy and wetted well. They have been dormant for nearly a month and it has rained since.

The 2 I have in ground are both my Italian unknown Bella

Well, I carried 45 potted figs ranging from 1 to 10 gallons, down the hill, around the house, and back up the hill to their winter resting place in the shed. This year, they are a little more cramped since the collection has grown but they really aren't complaining :) Now I have 2 in-ground trees that need to be wrapped. That will leave just 3 small cuttings growing in a window sill that I will care for over the winter. I have a few cuttings of some of the trees that I will root over the winter. Figs are hard work in the Northeast, but it is a labor of love I guess. I think I need a nap now!

Well Martin, I understand your reasons for getting rid of the tree. I am grateful that I have been able to get 2 very healthy trees from the wood you gave me last winter. One day I may come to the same conclusion as you with regards to this tree but we will see. For now, I have high hopes for it and it will forever be known as "Martin's Unknown" in my collection.

Peg,
I'm hoping others talk about their experiences to see if the cool, slow ripening has a similar effect on color. At this time I do not have enough data to draw conclusions. Although my gut tells me there is something to this.

Martin,

You may be right. I don't really know how to interpret the differences at this point. Time will tell.

Peg,

Curious if the cooler weather, which should slow the ripening process, has led to a richer color development. You are seeing it in your figs, my Unknown is very vivid in color and I also had a Weeping fig ripen that was a rich brown color (see pic). All of these seem different than what is typical. Interesting thought.

It does look like someone was pulling on it. Thanks for the laugh. I hope that fig has enough time to ripen so I can compare it to the first one.

Cecil - yup, they sure suck up the water!

Martin - I was expecting my fig to look more like your pictures that's why I waited longer to pick it so it was a little over ripe. I was surprised how different it looks compared to yours, they could easily be mistaken as different plants. Of course, it was a first fig so in time I'm sure it will resemble the parent tree. Regarding the shape, look at the attached pic of the other one on the tree ... very different

It's currently in a 50 quart pot. I have 2 trees and I'm considering planting one in the ground next spring. It took 107 days for that fig to mature and ripen. I attribute the long time to the poor weather this season.

Picked the first fig from the Martin's Unknown rooted over the winter. Because of the cool and rainy weather the past few days, the color did not develop as deeply as in other photos shared by Martin. This one was a little over ripe and has been dripping syrup for two days. Very tender and juicy but a little light on flavor and sweetness - not bad for a first season fig. The fig was big: 3.3 inches long and 2.0 inches wide.
