Desert King

My first fig of the year.

It was incredibly sweet, like refined sugar, not honey. The skin has a flavor like a good cantaloup near the rind and the pulp had a light strawberry flavor.
This is from the Desert King I got from Raintree two years ago. It has not been a very productive tree so far. This year only four figs. Which is not great for a six foot tree, but it is still young.

It has pretty heavy FMV, which may contribute to the low production, or it may be just the climate here is not conducive to brebas.

too bad it's not producing, but that's a very pretty tree. i'd keep it just for decoration.

Hi Andy, I have 5 Desert Kings in the ground, they're about 6 feet also. I bought them from One Green World ,many years ago. The leaves appear to be FMV free ( they could be a carrier though). I also had a poor breba crop. I picked about three figs this summer. They seem to have a main crop growing, now. Does your's have main crop or do I have a wrong variety? Elizabeth.

Is this the same as what people are just calling "King"?

Elizabeth,
As I understand it, DK is a San Pedro fig so the main crop needs pollination. I did leave a few of the main crop on last year, and they all dropped as expected. I going to try to protect it a little better from the cold snaps this fall before storing it in the garage for the winter. Maybe the brebas are getting frozen off before it moves in around Thanksgiving.

Hi Andy. Thanks for the info. I go and check and see if the main crop is still on the tree . I'll know for sure then , if I have the right variety. Elizabeth. I believe Desert King and King are the same.

Hi Andy. I went to my backyard and checked. The figs were small and wrinkly but still on the tree. I'll check again next week.

Pinch your tree branches. Put it to ground. DK produces well in Pacific North West. It
is reliable too, maybe for PNW. This season harvest has been great from DK. Good luck.
