I got to try my FIRST ever fig today :) It was a last minute kinda decision but I had a few free hours this afternoon so I stopped and picked up Tamar and we both went to visit Mike (NewnanDawg). The first thing he asked me when I got there was if I had the chance to try my first fig yet and I told him i'm patiently waiting for my Celeste to ripen and I wanted that one to be the first one since it was my first tree. He said "a celeste?! NO!, you're trying one now" and he led me to his kitchen and I saw his plate of beautiful figs he had picked this morning. On the plate were Malta Black, MBVS (I think) and Lyndhurst White. The lyndhurst white was the first one I tasted. I was really unsure what to expect and was a little hesitant. I first licked it and it tasted sweet so I bit into it. Mike and Tamar said the Lyndhurst White wasn't 100% ripe but it sure tasted really good to me. It was like eating honey :) The Malta Black and MBVS were also very sweet and berry flavored. I kinda forgot which one was which but I think the MBVS tasted like super ripe sweet strawberries. I got to try some other varieties as we walked around his yard looking at the 100's of figs hanging on his many many trees. I forgot the names of the ones I tasted but I think figs are now my favorite fruit :) Overall, my favorite was the Lyndhurst White. Mike and Tamar laughed because they said I might be a white-fig kinda guy. Also a plus for today was my new addition that i've been anxiously waiting for; a beautiful Kathleen's Black that he had been saving for me :) All in All, this was a very memorable day for me as I got to see familiar faces (I got to see Mike and his lovely humorous wife as well as sweet Tamar), knocked a fig off my wish list, and I got to taste my first fig and it was my favorite one out of the 6 varieties tasted today :)
