Awesome!  Just wanted to mention it in case you weren't aware!  Lots of complaints about it online in the last few months, and a couple of users complaining at work.  Glad to see someone enjoys it ;)

Ah, this explains why I've been getting hit with PMs again about this fig.  I don't think you folks know what stuff you stir up when you dig up old threads ;).  I got three different messages today, starting around 8:30am.  I was like, "what the hell?", so I checked the forum to see if the thread got bumped by someone.  Sure enough....

A couple of people have this variety rooted, I have one sprout that I'm overwintering indoors right now. I  never made it back around to the parent tree to talk to the owners.  Too much other stuff going on to deal with that (baby boy coming in less than 8 weeks).

Will keep this thread updated when/if fruit arrives this year.  We'll see!  If cuttings are available, I'll post a new thread on the forum.  Anyone reading, please hold off on email messages or private messages till you see a separate thread offering cuttings (Because I've got major CRSS - "can't remember sh** syndrome" - so I'm bound to forget.)

Thanks Jason for keeping us posted! Sounds like people think your plants will be fine--I would not sweat the loquats too much. Congrats on the baby boy on the way :).

So, wait a minute Jason, were talking number two on the way then?! Didn't you get one of those little diaper fillers just last year or something like that?

(So nobody gets too excited about my "diaper filler" comment, just kidding folks. Got two of my own so I know from experience that they do indeed fill a lot of diapers - bless their little hearts :-) !)

Anyhoo, congrats on the new one Jason!

BTW, I had a feeling you'd be getting some new PM's because of this thread being bumped. I didn't see it the first time around so I had to even exercise a little self control myself. It does seem to be a sweet little fig find ;) .

Yeah, Bill!  Our daughter turned 2 end of October. Little boy due start of February.  Probably calling it quits after that.  There's a reason I haven't been around - crapload of house remodeling and other crap going on right now in preparation.

Bill, your name came up today in conversation!  Met a couple of pepperheads in KY on G+ and sending them some seeds and other goodies this week.

Pete,

We just had our third, and im sure my opinion will change as they get older, but three kids(all boys ages 4,2,3 months) is a LOT.

My advice to all expectant dads: Alcohol....Lots and lots of alcohol!

Well indeed Jason, a big congrats again! One of each -  just like my crew.

My wife & I were married 6 yrs before we had our first one. Life forever changed after that though. I hear that the "wonder" kind of wears off by the time they hit there teens and you begin to wonder "what the heck were we thinking"?! LOL!!

Before we had our first one, I wanted to stop at just one. But my wife said we shouldn't have one without a "playmate". So we had decided early on that we would stop at two. Now, if I were 20 years younger, I'd want 3-4 more. But I'm happy to be blessed with the two great kids that we have.

one of the reason why we decided to stop at 2. what if the 3rd one is also boy? we both wanted just one girl, but i think it turned out great. they are great brothers. make me wish i had a brother.

@ Tim. Laughing my butt off here! With three boys, I'm sure a little Jim Beam from time to time would sure help to calm the nerves.

@ Jason. I'm sure I sound a little ignorant to those who know, but I meant to ask, what are pepperheads?

Coincidentally, I sold some cuttings to a couple of fellow Kentuckians via eBay just recently. One happened to live close enough that I delivered his cuttings instead of shipping them. It seems that more and more folks every year are figuring out how to grow figs in our climate :-) .

Love the latter half of this thread.

@Slingha, no worries, PM'ed you.  I didn't to mean to sound like I was complaining... just kinda saying, "hey, be aware!" - really, look at how awesome this became because you bumped it ;)

@ Bill, pepperheads!  I found a couple that live in Louisville that loooove hot peppers, heirloom peppers, etc.  They mostly grow superhots.  Don't get me wrong, I know they're way SW of you, but ... it's closer than ATL!  ;)

Ooohhh, Pepperheads! Good thing it wasn't some obscure reference then ;)) lol.

Well, I do like my hot peppers too. But they've got to have the right flavor. I'm not crazy about the "citrusy" flavor that those Habeneros have. I prefer the ones that have more of that smokey/musky flavor. That's about the best way I can think to describe it anyway.

I have one that I got from a local buddy that I really like. It's a super hot one that looks kinda like a larger Thai Chile but it's got the right flavor. Hot-N-Smokey :) .

I actually got to try some of one that's supposed to be the hottest on the planet. I think it's called the Ghost Chile or somethin' or other like that. What I tried was the dried, powdered form of it. I'm sure a fresh one would have been much hotter. It has a really good smokey flavor but man it was HOT! I tested it by first dipping the end of a just one tine of my fork in it. I managed to work my way up to a couple of tine tips but that was about all I wanted at the moment for fear of it ruining the taste of my meal. Not to mention the fear of that feeling of burning down south some time the next day :-O !!

This thread has really veered off topic hasn't it? But I'm guessing you're just fine with that huh Jason?

totally fine with that ;)

Ghost/Jolokia used to be the hottest, but apparently the Carolina Reaper has unseated it by a considerable margin.  I actually just sent the pepperheads some ghost pepper salt with some other goodies.  Three or four grains of that salt and your mouth is lit up for 5-10 minutes.  Good finishing salt for sashimi.

And I might be interested in that superhot smokey pepper you're talking about ...

I received cuttings in trade, against my Col de Dame from Jason, and I managed to root one plant, and here is how it look in comparison to UCD Ischia Black and other wannabe I collected over time,in my quest to find a healthy Black Ischia Plant.
So first is UCD IB,next is Jason Black fig
next :
Gardenovay Ischia Black
Marcus Black
Blue Ischia(Hirts gardens)
Ucd Ischia is 9 years old.

My opinion,is that out of them all,Jason Atalanta black unknown featured in this topic,is the closest to ,UCD Ischia Black,of course except the FIG Mosaic virus, not being infected.
Basically, what I am saying is that first and second pix represent the same cultivar, while the other 3 are different.
Take a look,and ,if you see,that I missed something,and I am wrong,say so!.
All Pixies taken today!

i think it's close, but not exact match. but leaves can show slight variations. figs will definitely show if they are same.

edit: check out following link. it's Col. Littman's Black Cross. i think the leaf pattern is similar to jason's unknown.

Col. Littman's Black Cross, has bigger fruits and leaves.
Being called a Black cross, hints to a hybrid, and if so,the mother of it was Ischia Black.
*i think it's close, but not exact match*,your remark is  true, but I have a reason for it.
On UCD Ischia Black, more than half of leaves are distorted and deformed by Fig mosaic virus, yet they will look uniform and identical,to,Jason tree if UCD Ischia Black was  void of virus.
When a fig is healthy, most leaves are very similar in shape,at this time in the Summer.
The fruits are identical, just look in post #75,you will see pixies of ripe and unripe fruits from my UCD Ischia Black fig.
As for me to compare them in the future, that is a big problem, because UCD Ischia Black, made only a handful of fruits in 9 years so I do not know if i ever will have ripe fruits again from this ,plant.

Well it sounds like others have it too, eventually it'll spread to someone who gets some ripe IB. This is a great thread, every time it comes up I still read through most of the comments. Herman, to me it definitely looks close, and it makes sense that there has to be more out there. I dream about the day someone has a post about a tree trimming/ mass cutting distribution for this one!

Jason, how do you make hot pepper salt? All I can think is mixing the powdered pepper with quality salt, but that doesn't seem to fit with

Vasile,

I have the same one from Jason. During the time I was rooting and growing it indoors it was perfect with no FMV. I had an extra and gave it away.

The one I kept had stopped growing and developed FMV. Not to the point to push the red emergency button, but to the point to stunt the growth. I think.

Hasn't grown since I took it outside. Has fruit on it though.

My Plant from Jason, does not show any Fig mosaic virus on leaves as ,you can see the plant, but it is not growing, like other cultivars,so it is slow in growing up.
I do not use and fertiliser, because it make it ,not hardy if i do.
Better small and live next Spring, than large now and dead,by next April.

Here are some pictures of mine.

This is from Jason as well. One and the same as Vasiles.
It was started in the basement along with the other cuttings and was looking perfect. No sign of FMV at all. But things took a turn when I took it outside. I had another one just as perfect and I gave that away to another friend.

I heard he got all sucked into parenthood, still has most of his figs, although he's is battling through an exceptionally cold winter.  He expects to be back around again when the littlest one is up, walking and talking, which is hopefully this year.

Seriously, though... The garage has a number of 6'-8' tall trees laid down sideways through it this year.  Several stacked along the walls.  It's tough to get in and out of the cars and to load the kids in, but that's the price we pay for being fig nuts, right?

You could email like everyone else, Rafed ;)  Miss ya, bud!

I wasn't gonna be the one who bumped this thread....but since it's already been done :)  I too am curious.  It's a great read, even though it never got a conclusion.  I didn't know it was possible to have suspense and drama over a tiny little fruit.

You've done it now Frank ;) .

I'm still curious about this little fig too. It sure brought a lot of attention to Jason's table back when he first posted about it.

I know Jason is a very busy dad now but maybe one day he'll surprise us all and dump an arm load of cuttings on us. Well, we can dream anyway.

Not really dropping a hint Jason - just having fun. Hope all is well with you & your family.

Hi Fellows:
I had 2 ripe fruits From Jason Black fig,and I got only one to taste and look inside, the other the squirrels got it.
In my opinion,Jason unknown Black is not Ischia Black, but:
It is Negretta.
This is my conclusion i came at after i checked all information and pixies of Negretta.
It matches to a T.
Best Regards
