I am trying to hook up with people that own fig trees in ky. i recently moved here and i am trying to figure out about climate whether i should protect my trees this winter i have several figs from old country i dont know names or nothing all i know is i love to eat them please help.

I live in Bowling Green,KY. I have raised figs here for 3 years. I bring the pots into the garage for the winter. The hardest thing for me is the strong storms with hail and the heat in July and Aug.

#4 present and accounted for.   Just started my fig addiction in March 2011.  Container culture is the phrase of the day.  I may one day put a few hardy variety in the ground, but I am holding out because we will likely move in four years (son will graduate from high school) and I am NOT leaving my figs in my yard, and I don't want to have them dug up to take them with me.   Figs will live in the dark garage this winter but after that they will over-winter at a local nursery in their winter greenhouse. (unless Santa brings me a greenhouse).

Is Nashville close enough?  I've got two trees in ground, 10 1st year rooted cuttings and a growing list of inground trees growing in Nashville.

I am farthest north for the group, 2 miles from the Ohio River...but I could road trip to Nashville.   I would LOVE to make the fig rounds in that city Caney!!  I wouldn't know how to behave seeing that many figs in one city.

Well, it looks like there are at least four of us fig nuts that live within a couple hours or so drive from Mario's place. It does seem that his place is the most central relative to us all. Now we just have to talk Mario into letting us all stop by sometime :) . We'd have to each bring him a cold hardy fig tree of course.

Sounds like a road trip.....

Maybe we can all set a date on here, and we can all get together, and i might even cook some real italian lasagna .

Guys...I can get away with saying GUYS because I am the only female!!!  Hmm, I wonder what the breakdown is on the membership in the forum male vs. female?  I digress.   Ultimately Mario I guess it all boils down to WHEN you think the optimal time will be for us to arrive and descend on the ripe figs.  LOL.   If I had to pick a day, it would be Sunday because I am committed to working 8/20 & 8/27 & 9/3. What about August 28th, or do we need to go into September? 

Thoughts guys?

Edit at 1024a 8/12/11:  I would LOVE to bring my husband with me, it would be a date for us!  I have a 14 yr old, but I suspect he will say--uh, I will stay home.   I can bring some wine---not that we would have to drink it there, but it could go home with everyone. I just happen to work at the most award-winning winery in the state(state, regional, and international awards).

Did somebody say lasagna!? I don't think it could get any better than that. Lasagna and figs too!? I'm in  :-) . I can bring sodas.

The 28th may work for me Sara. What about you Mario & Dave?

Sounds good to me, but i don't know if any of my figs will be ready then. I am picking atreano figs now but i am afraid there might not be any left on that tree the 28 . I am posting some pictures on a bunch i picked today.

Well, we may miss out on some ripe Atreano but it will still be nice to meet everyone, share some knowledge, and maybe make some plant swaps.

I looked a little closer at the calender and the 28th still looks like it will work out best for me.

Besides, maybe by then one of your other varieties will be putting on some ripe figs Mario ;) .

By the way, I hope it's OK if I bring my camrea to get some pics of your trees.

I was given the go-ahead by Mario to post this info on here for those who are interested.

I spoke with him by phone today and he said we are good to go for a visit to his place on Sunday Aug 28.

This is primarily directed to those of us who live within a couple of hours of Morgantown, KY.

This particularly means you guys:

- & Myself

From what I gather, Mario would not be apposed to a few others stopping by on the same day if you're in the area. You'd have to e-mail or PM him in person to confirm whether you're coming or not though.

As for a time frame? This will basically be an afternoon/early evening visit. I will be there around 3:pm myself.

From the sounds of things, there may be some figs to sample and Mario assured me that there will be some Italian cooking on hand since he "loves to cook"!

Sounds good Sara. Mario said he's trying to preserve a few of his Atreano figs for us to sample. But he said they are about gone but I'm hoping that a few will hang on for one more week just for us :) .

I think I will PM the other guys to see if they are going to make it.

Dang, dang, double and triple dang!  The moons aren't lining up right - looks like it will be a fig-free weekend for me.  Am heading to Atlanta Thursday night for a ministry and tried to meet up with  Satelitehead, but family is going to be in town.  Found a substitute for me for the Sunday work so I can leave Sat. night to get back to Nashville.  My wife's birthday is the 28th and in 32 years I haven't missed her birthday.  She already has the whole day planned out.

How about an update for those in KY and surrounding areas? I have Celeste and Brown Turkey in the ground the Celeste is about 15 yrs old and brown turkey about 5. I have several trees in pots and bunch of cuttings started this spring. West KY - Ballard County here.

I have a Negronne...three years in ground with leaves piled up at the base for a little winter protection.  I've learned that I prefer the main crop to the breba so I hard prune for main crop each year.  It is a tree...meaning it sprouts from the main trunk and does not make a bush.  Negronne is delicious!  I also have a two year in ground Kadota....same winter treatment....so far I don't care for the tough skin.  I have 6 cuttings of different varieties I started this winter from cuttings.....love trading with you all.  Four of these I am making into a step over and two I am braiding together.

i have celeste, brown turkey, verte, hardy chicago, MvsB, Jh adriatic in ground. rest of my list in pots, mostly young plants.  should have my first harvest this yr.  any interest in a get together, swap & shop, etc?

Hi! My husband and I are interested in starting to grown figs on our small homestead and would love to find any hardy varieties that are being grown locally. We are in south central Kentucky, about an hour and a half from Bowling Green. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!
