Any opinions on what causes this ?

My brother in law has a 6 foot fig tree (unknown variety that makes purple sweet figs) in a half whiskey barrel. It grows in a "droopy" style, the branches are weeping downward and the bark is dark and speckled. He broke off a branch accidentally when taking it out of the garage this spring and gave it to me to try and root. Can anyone advise as to why his bark looks this way and why his tree grows so "gnarly" looking? It's almost Bonsai looking. BTW we live in NY zone 7/7a. When his tree leafs out i will take some pics and attach them. The only other droopy fig tree I've seen was in the video of Martha Stewart at the Bellecleare nursery. Attached photo is of the branch he gave me to root. Any ideas?

The plant in the first picture is loaded with some type of scale insect. It's hard to tell from the photo, but it may be causing the "drooping". It looks like a pretty bad infestation.
