Asking for cuttings

Hi fellow figgers,

I am back in Houston. In Malaysia I had about 12 varieties of fig plants but here in Houston I have only Brown Turkey and Celeste. Can any body spare me some new cuttings?

Your best bet is to ask in the fall or early winter.

Thanks for the tip.

Mine will be available in January

No, I have not reached that standard of seriousness yet. Maybe you can call me a cheap collector, ha, ha, ha.

That and even Peters Honey is $7.50+ shipping per cutting. For $11 at most I can get Izbat an Naj cuttings and that's if I buy one at a time. Let's be honest I would rather have the Izbat. eBay is for people that don't have the patience and who are bit hard by the fig bug

Asking for cutting ?
Yes indeed. Ebay listing fig cutting for sale are over price especially plus for shipping also.

I doubt you will find cuttings for 50 cents each! $3.50 per cutting doesn't sound too high to me for "Yellow Long Neck' There is a lot  of people here on our forum that buys off eBay. We have several members who sell cuttings on eBay.........Just saying....

I agree with Frankallen. If you want the cuttings buy them. Check out the seller first but there are lists of trusted sellers who put a lot of time and work into their fig trees and expecting them to part with their cuttings for almost nothing is, in my opinion, highly insulting. Get to know people and if they want to offer you something they will. You can also put it below your post as a wish list.

Motion carried.

Agree with Frankallen and arachyd as well.

I agree with you that some people will want reward for their hard work. Yes it is only fair but please note that I did not outright ask for free cuttings from them. I mearly asked if anyone can spare me some cuttings if you understand the meaning of 'spare'. The reason I did not put up my wish list is that I do not go for rare or exotic variety. I would accept anything given to me as beggars are no choosers. I hope you fellow figgers will not misunderstand me.

Remind me in the winter and I'll send a few

Maybe you didn't ask for free cuttings. But look at the title to your thread. And you didn't offer to pay or trade. So you've made 13 posts on this forum and this is the second time you've ask for cuttings. How about contributing something before you put your hand out.

I dont think anyone would care to sell cuttings for 50 cents lol. Do you think people live off selling cuttings? Would you not consider someone's time, packing, travel to the post office etc all for the benefit of a stranger?? for 50 cents!!..$3.50 for a yellow long is cheaper than any price I've seen on many places. I have seen cuttings on offer here for $1 but those are limited and you get those if you are lucky plus $5-$10 shipping. You might want to look out for give aways.

Yes, I agree, there are many very generous people in the forum.
However, It takes time and luck, I got some inexpensive cuttings here, with my poor rooting skill, I killed many of them.

If you do not want to wait, buy it from Ebay, It is not cheap, you need good rooting skill.

Fig trees grow fast, They grow 6-9 Feets in one year in my area, There are lots of cuttings.
So I put down Grantham royal, Florea and few other in ground Those are good for low heat PNW area and UK.

Am from Malaysia too and I love figs. I have lots of collection in my backyard. Most of the cutting I bought from member in here. $3.50 percutting is way too cheap. I spent more than that plus shipping cost. But for my love of figs, I don't mind to spend some $$. Members in here are very generous too. They put some extra cutting. To ask for free cutting? Damn NO. Lots of effort needed for someone to cut, packing and sent the cutting.

The other aspect of this that crosses my mind is all the time that many on here spend freely giving away their hard earned knowledge and experience. There are many here that have spent hundreds if not thousands of hrs over the yrs helping others. If a person doesn't have money or something to trade then helping others would be a great way to earn something in return. Those that come and right off want something for nothing, well I wasn't raised that way.

I gave away a bunch of free cuttings from several in ground trees last November and will likely do so again. Free as in no additional charge per cutting but the buyer is expected to pay shipping cost based on what type of mail options they prefer. that said, I was shocked at how much work is required to offer FREE cuttings to forum members... Aside from the thoughtful pruning, the cuttings must get either stretch plastic wrapped or thrown into baggies with moist towelettes. The packages must be put into shipping mailers (think about the excel bookkeeping required to keep track of addresses for 100 people asking for said cuttings), addresses affixed and then the trip to the Post office. The drive time to and fro is negligible... until you have to make 5 trips of 20 packages apiece to get them all in system and on their way without incurring the wrath of everyone on line behind you for daring to ship 20 packages at one time. The time waiting for the clerk to complete the clerical aspects of shipping 20 packages to different locations also rapidly adds up. We are talking about normal shipping for run of the mill hobbyists; grower/members who do this as a primary or sideline business likely have shortcuts in the shipping process / systems that allows them to be more efficient than hobbyists.

Honestly, forum members are really amazing to take on the extra work of giving away and shipping cuttings to folks (at a time of year where serious demands on gardening time are being made). We do it because we want to pay the generosity we received  forward. If I was going to charge for cuttings (people can NOT just give away every variety they have in inventory but should feel comfortable to charge a reasonable amount for rare varieties since they did not come to them cheaply), the time and effort required to do even a modest amount of cuttings would not be covered by $.50 a cutting... even for 200 cuttings... Honestly, having done it, if I was going to charge for cuttings to forum members, cost of labor, material and travel / misc time expended would drive up the per stick cost far beyond what some folks consider to be reasonable... until they do it themselves...

Remind me in next month or so and I'll send you some. Best wishes and good luck with this fascinating hobby.

Come over here to Europe and you can also pay $15 - $20 for one cutting or if you're lucky, for three. When you've found them also be prepared to spend up to $40 to get them posted - that's around $25 - $30 more expensive than it actually costs to do it.
