I started my Brown Turkey MD from a cutting last spring. For some reason, the fruit is much larger this year. The first picture is from last year. The second two are of a fig I picked today. Both figs are main crop.

That fig sure looks good. How is the taste compared to a Eastern Brown Turkey? Tim

What does the MD part stand for?
Maybe a surprise is coming (your way).

I've only had normal Brown Turkey from the store. I've never had a good one (although to be fair, they probably all could have used some more ripening). Brown Turkey MD is a tasty fig. It's fairly sweet, not super rich, and has maybe a little bit of a berry taste.

It's a Herman2 fig, but I started mine from a cutting I got from Jon last spring. The MD stands for Maryland. Herman says it's identical to Black Marseilles VS. Jon thinks it's a different fig. I haven't had BMVS, so I have no idea. Here's a thread with more info: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=4621415&highlight=brown+turkey.

Matt,
You got (guessed) it right.

[I still got mine with the old label as MD1943BT)

I originally got my Brown Turkey MD from a lady in Maryland. I had ragged on Brown Turkey as not worth growing or eating. She sent me cuttings of her "Brown Turkey" and said that it would convince me once and for all that BT was a great fig. Her "BT" was fabulous and I was convinced that her "BT" was the best, except that it was not really a Brown Turkey in reality. So I labeled it Brown Turkey MD (for Maryland), but am tired of explaining it, so I am now calling it Maryland Berry because of its origin and nice berry flavor. And the hunt for a good BT does not go on.

So this (best) explains it all;
Unlike mine, Jon's did not come direct from h2.

I stand corrected. I don't think I'm going to tell the tree, though. It's been through enough identity crises as it is. For all it knows, its great-grandfig rode a Sherman tank through the Arc de Triomphe on VE Day, tucked away in some happy GI's pocket.

I guess this means I have to get a Black Marseilles VS now.

Also, Paully...speak for yourself.

"Maryland Berry" sounds like a very good fig name to me...

And yes, anybody that reads/posts in-here AND have more
than (say) 3 fig trees, qualifies as a real fig_nut!
[The average family, neither has the space or needs more than 1-3 (good)
fig trees.]
