Bills planter pots

Here are a few pictures of one of Bill's pot and the new HD pots for a side by side comparison.  The HD pots are fluted at the bottoms some like a whiskey barrel.  I use Bill's method and I also use 4" flex drain pipe.  Both method work very well.  I had a great source or 55g food grade barrels.  But the lady's house burned down and she's not able to store them anymore.  She use to sell me the barrels for $10 each!  here are the pics!

Black Ischia UCD is growing in the pot on the left with Hydrocorn on top of a weedguard.  I hate weeds!

Thanks Dennis, very nice photos.
So it appears that you don't cover the top of your pots with plastic like I saw when I bought some trees from Bill back in September.

He says he likes to cover the tops for the first few years, keeps the moisture in and less chance of figs splitting when it rains during ripening.  I'm curious if you have tried it both covered and uncovered and noticed any difference?

The first year, I covered them with thick mil plastic.  It was a huge pain!  Why?  Because I have so many to cover.  After a year, the weather deteriorated it so bad and it added much more moisture.  We don't get much rain like some states and my trees are on a drip irrigation except for a few in front of my garage like these.  Without the plastic is much better all around, time, money and all.  Just about all of my trees are fed from the bottom.

Hi guys I am going on my 2nd year with the HD SIPs and I am having great growth with them but this year my leafs are a lighter green and a my figs look a little off, any ideas?  I was thinking it might be root bound but its only been a year and half?  Thanks in advance!

I use Bill's method. Your tree is fine. There is nothing to worry about. Sometimes Figs do weird things. welcome to the world of Figs. Just keep doing what you're doing and you will be fine.

I was just at Costco and they have pots 25in wide and about 15.30 length. I purchased several. The cost was $12.97. The pots are similar to the HD resin wheel barrow pots but wider and longer. They seem well made.

Dave, those should work well for you.  Bill's original pots are just like those at Costco.  He don't sell the old one anymore but they were the largest and deepest.  I called and spoke to him about them and he agreed his new pots are only 14 inches deep.  I have 2 of them but wish they were 16 inches.  I guess I need to make a Costco run!  However, I did get 25 of the one Lowes had for sale about 3 months ago.  They're 16 inches deep but $17 each.  My military discounts helps some but 12 bucks is hard to beat!

Dennis,

Thanks. I decided to go back and pick up 4 more.

I found these at a local Tractor Supply store, and the person there was willing to sell them to me for about $5 a pieces. I said, I'll take all you have for that price. Unfortunately that was only 12, but still great. That should cover most of my largest up-potting this winter (8-10 other will go in-ground).
