Hi Remis, very very nice and hoped the taste was good as it looked. Remis be very careful if you wheel your plants in and out in very early spring . I do each season with all my plants , my 30 inch Maderia did not like it with temps in high 40s it killed it to soil level . Again very nice and shows what can be done here in Illinois growing them in containers - way to go !!!

It certainly has a unique flavor. I'm glad that it ripened for you. My Black Madeira was very early this year. It started in beginning of September. It still has a few ripening now. Last year it wasn't dark since it ripened very late, this year it's almost black.
Here's how mine looked this year:
Compared to last year:

Nice pixes and yes ,_A new confirmation, that Madeira black will ripe in the north,as the poster live in Chicago area. I am frustrated,I also had 3 ripe figs, that dissapeared suddenly overnight, just the morning when I intended to pick them and take a pix too. It was before Oct 1,I think. Now the rest of them about 6 do not show any sign they are getting ripe soon. I am going to remove half of them , today in hope of helping the rest.!

leon_edmond , I use my Nikon D300 camera. Herman ,this is Black Madeira`s first year as I started it from cutting this past Spring hope next year It will ripen earlier. At this time of year I still have some figs on my trees ripening ,but thats because my trees are in their 1 st season next year they will be erlier. From cutings started this year I had chase to taste of falloving: Sal El (16 figs) VdB (12 figs) Chicago Hardy (4 figs) Marseilles Vs (6 figs) Black Madeira (2 figs) Excel there are 3 figs ripening (will be ready in about 3days). I think it was pretty good as for 1 st year. Next year should be very good as my trees will be biger.

I had doubts that Black Madeira would fruit for me in middle Europe. As temperatures dropped in the last weeks very much, and it rains, I removed 3 unripe figs from this one. After cutting them through I had to realize that they where already red inside,
They were not so far from ripening. Next year with hopefully better weather.

Last (I think, there is still a green one on) Black Madeira ripened today. Definitely at or near the top for taste. I still don't have a good description for the taste. The outside isn't much, but the inside tastes like concentrated jam.

Joe, Right about now your only hope would/could be Jon at Encanto Farms. Yes, right here. He should have some available sometime in February. Keep your eyes and ears open during that time. He will inform us all on the date he will list what he will be selling. I would contact him ( just for the bugging him sake ) now and ask him if at all possible put you on a list for this variant. No promises I'm sure but it's worth the try. jusalda, Thanks for posting these fine pics. Very tasty looking figs indeed. Congrats!

gluglo, what part of Madeira are you from? My family came from Canhas almost 100 years ago. Are you close? I visited there in late October 2004 and don't recall seeing any figs but wasn't looking for them specifically either. You use the name breba negra. Would you also use the name figo preto? Do you see more than one type of black fig in Madeira?

I edited your post a little in my quote so that the formatting isn't corrupted. Thanks for the information. If you ever get a chance, it would be nice to see photographs of some of the old fig trees from there like the mother tree you described above. So you realize, it is not considered acceptable to use the photographs of others without their permission so that is why see complaints about that. It has happened before and it is taken seriously.

Nice analogy, Dominick. He might have a pretty good fig here but listing them as Galacia Negra, RdB, etc. is obviously misleading.

Cultural differences, believe me as a Portuguese Interpreter I meet these situations all the time. I came to the conclusion it is the 'Portuguese' in all of us that get us in trouble, at times, innocent moves, just to please, or engage and boom - just back fires! Once, over the phone, the speaker after trying to get a real answer from the "Port. Speaker", finally had enough and said :"no wonder the Portuguese lost their Empire".... that is how I feel at times, my entire Empire is lost, due to not 'conforming' with rules I didn't even know existed.

Hello everyone been awhile since I have been on the forum, there seems to be some confusion to this thread. Figo Preto and Bêbera Preta are not the same fig. They look different taste different ripen at different times leaves are different and Figo Preto rarely fully ripens its Breba crop unlike Bêbera Preta. Gluglo I too am from Madeira and there is more than one black and one white fig infact if you read the Elucidário Madeirense you can read all about it. I do believe figo Preto & Black madeira are the same.

Latest new: gluglo just had posted a new thread with nothing more other than pure self advertising and $$$'s in his eyes. Just after a first-responder f4f-member (you know you are) told him to (basically) PO; that same thread suddenly vanished!? Some serious salt-grains may be needed here....

I would say more but... I will just say this. I wish this would stop especially with how I feel about the 'Black Madeira' Name being misused. Just don't want there to be any confusion.

All I can only say that the first-responder name (which I saw) started with an "s" (not Dom). Hope that this person will back me up if this ever becomes a nasty issue. Well, we all heard the story of another individual selling BM twigs that much later fruited 'white' figs (oh, what a trill if Martin was the victim! he was not).

George some members would get a kick out of that . ; ) Jennifer a real cheap DNA test. Grow em side by side in same potting mix observe them and also do a taste test over a good period of time this should help .
