I've been growing Black Madeira for several years now here in Ohio and it's always a pain.  It splits so easy with just a little bit of rain, plus we have a super short growing season due to snow through early May and cold weather in September.

But this year we have a freakishly hot September!  My kid's school is letting them out early every day this weak because of high heat risks, but my figs couldn't be happier.  I have a few of these beauts coming into ripe now, ant traps are set around the tree, there's no rain forecast for the whole week, and they're OOZING fig honey!  :-D

Cannot wait!

 

Nice job..!! Even here and in a greenhouse it's August before the first ripen. There are more green ones than those that ripen by yrs end.

They look huge. Hope your traps work out. They are only a couple days from being ready. Do you keep your pots covered with plastic?

Steve, those look great!  I wish I had a green house sometimes, it's on the works on my "I'll hopefully do this in the future" list of things I never do. :-)

Every year the overwhelming majority of my Black Madeiras stay green and don't ripen, it is the saddest.  :-(  I haven't had a good one at all this year because both times it was going to happen we had a little rain and they just burst right open.  I have that problem with Figo Preto a little, too.  I've heard people suggest BM and FP are the same variety, but I think they are not.  BM splits much wider, all of my BMs are dripping fig honey right now and none of my FPs are, and they don't look exactly the same either.

Richie, I don't keep them in plastic.  Do you?  Should I?
