Black Madeira has a nasty reputation of being a slow grower, but no one told this not so little guy the news. I rooted this from a cutting back in May and this is it now in a 3 gal SWC.  She's even trying to fruit.  This late into October, I'm unsure if I should keep them on or not.  I'm also wondering if it's too late in the season and is the trunk too green for air layering both the main stem half way up and the side growth?

 

Let it grow and you will have 100% chance of air layering next summer. Be happy you got a livly cutting. :-)*

What is your source for this vigorous Black Madeira?

If you search the forum, you will see that there are (were) several BM sources; The said to be "sick one" is the one from UCD-DAVIS when they still offered scions.
There were other figtrees coming from the Madeira Island called BM.
If memory serves me well, Encanto farm has a BM (a bit) different from the UCD-DAVIS-BM.
As long as the fruit is good and fitting into your expectations ... Grow yours and see what she does !

All the UC Davis Black Madeira cuttings are not crippled by fig mosaic. When I received my single Black Madeira cutting from UC Davis several years ago, I raised 4 trees from it. Three were not affected at all by FMV. One was affected and took a few years to come out of it. Numerous trees have been raised from cuttings from these trees (both by me and by others). They seem to be very vigorous.
