Black Mission, Brown Turkey and Celeste from Lowes?

So all the Lowe's stores in my area get their figs from Florida, I forget the nursery name right now. I would guess all locations in the south that carry Brown Turkey and Celeste probably get theirs from the same place. I know they do in Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina at least. This year I noticed some "Black Mission" figs for the first time ever, and I am very aware that Lowe's is not good with getting correct varieties labeled etc. However I was wondering if any of you in this part of the country have ever purchased a Black Mission from Lowe's and did it actually turn out to be the correct variety? How about the Brown Turkey's and Celeste? This post was really geared towards my curiosity about the Black Mission as I have known people in my area to correctly get Celeste and Brown Turkey from Lowes in the past. Plus Celeste and Brown Turkey are VERY common in these areas. I have never seen Black Mission and I used to live in NC as well and have checked all over Alabama and TN in the past.

I bought a brown turkey from lowes about
10 years ago ,turned out to be correct.
I live in Louisiana.

Hey that's awesome man.  You have any pics of the tree or the fruit?  If so maybe you should post it and when I get some I'll do the same and this post can be helpful on the issue of varieties from Lowe's.

Does the fruit look anything like my current profile pic?

Is it Simpson Nursery?

I think that Simpson nursery in Monticello, Florida is a large seller to Lowe's and HD in the Southeast, has been notorious for mislabeling. I sell most trees that I get from Lowe's and HD closeout sales as "unknowns", I do leave the existing tags(without pricing) in place. I do not keep them long enough to see figs.

Yea you can get them for a few bucks.

When do Lowes and HD normally have their close out sales?

As soon as the leaves turn brown!!! HD had some Nero's in a decorative container for $25......the first day the display was up 3 were broken at the top. Two day later wilted as the container had a cardboard cover to make watering impossible. Multiple types of fruit trees all $25 almost dead in a week.......still no discount offered.

My HD brown Turkey was a lemon fig.

My Ischia from Lowes (fall end of season sale) is really a White marsielles (sp?). ( dewars)

I saw what looked like improved celeste at walmart labled Hardy Chicago. (Simpson).

Nero has an open eye, good luck and be caureful out there.

Yes, it's simpson nursery.

Hey it's awesome that so many people responded so quickly!  I hope that others will share their experiences here.  I have a few trees I have acquired from Lowe's and HD in the past but never got fruit.  I would like to see what others have gotten.

Maybe we can at least get a post that shares the mislabeled figs from Simpson nursery and can at least figure out what they are really selling...

any current pics. When this years figs ripen
up,will be sure post them!

Does your Brown Turkey look like my photo?

So I went to HD today and I'm questioning some of the labels of the smaller 1 gal potted figs.  Those listed at celeste are quite possibly violette de bordeaux, based on the leaf pattern.  I do know they sell that variety down here as i've seen it before at this HD, but i'm almost ok with buying it to see what surprise fig I end up with.  Has anyone see a VdB at HD?

Yes! I bought one from them (HD) as far as I know it's a VdB. That's what it said on the container and tag.

Where are you located Laeotis?  I have never seen VdB in TN, AL or NC at the HDs or Lowes' stores.  I only tend to see Celeste and Brown Turkey.  However Walmart last year had 4 varieties from a different nursery in Florida but they were all misidentified.  I bought a "Green Ischia" only find it was truly a "White Marseille."  I check the nurseries of all the stores I can because you never know what they may have and what they may have on discount at different parts of the year.

Tucson AZ! I wouldn't doubt if it was misidentified, I saw two fig trees misidentified at a local nursery, two completely different leaf structures on two completely different fig plants as the same... I got a fig tree at (HD) for $10 because it had no label, only to have them tell me it was a brown turkey when it looked like a Kadota to me, maybe a white Kadota. I have since grafted two cuttings onto it lol, but the rest is doing excellent!

Lol Lewi! I  bought 2 Celestial fig trees from Lowes 5 years ago at the same time 1 turned out to be Celeste and the other Lemon.Stay away from Willis orchards nothing they have sold me has turned out to be what I ordered.

Wow a lemon fig would be a nice surprise.  How does it taste?

Petals from the past sells Lemon fig trees. $12 or so for a good one gallon. As I recall it's a mild, light sweet fig with a slight citrus taste. I think it's a pretty good size fig also. I would compare it to white Marseille in size and taste.

Lemon fig has that grassy lemon taste if it is not very ripe...then it turns Jammy and and tasty, eye opens upon ripening...

However Celeste is less drought tolerant, if you neglect them they die...

Willis -TyTy-pecan nursury-etc. Has so many names for the same lousy Business...glad I avoided them after doing a search....

I have a mystery fig from Sam Waltons glorious general store, maybe one day Ill have a ripe fig to speed ID! Ok, it was 2 dollars 50 cents on clearance...leaf shape varies from mission to almost HC, to almost Magnolia...wierd tree...just about died to the ground even protected. (Ok I did moove it right before winter to a sunnier spot...so maybe my fault?).

My Wellsprings Garden TX Everbearing is in line with Du Rio Nurseries discription, and grew nice and big...so those looking for cheaper fig trees should look there..I dont eat fruit the first 3 years...so tissue culture is good with me.
