Today I picked the one and only breba that my Castle Kennedy produced. It has got quite a lot of maincrop figs but time will tell as to whether or not they ripen. It weighed in at 157.5g and was quite big in size. Tasted lovely and jammy. I have restrained myself from eating all of it and saved some for my other half.

It has some seeds in it, which I assume will be sterile, seeing as how we are in Scotland.

That's one big breba. Lovely and jammy is what you want a fig to be.

You may be surprised.
Course that only tells part of the story. Figs will survive our winters ok, but there's just not enough sustained sun and heat to get reliable outdoor main crops.
If you're growing your Castle Kennedy under cover you stand a much better chance.

We are in North East Scotland and pretty much the coldest temperatures on that chart, sometimes colder. Out on the Moray coast the weather is much better.

We do have the advantage of more hours of daylight during the summer, compared with somewhere like London but the lack of heat is a nuisance. I am keeping most of my figs in an unheated polytunnel which helps.

Thanks Timo, yes it was the size of a pear. The other varieties that I have had fruit on this year have all been tiny, so this one was a shock. I do hope that we get good late summer and autumn weather. I really want to taste all the maincrop figs on my other figs.
