Something was getting in my figs at night. It was eating half-dozen each night.Last night right before bed the dog started really barking. He had a nasty opossum caught red handed in one of the fig trees. It took us a while to get him without getting bit, but eventually the dog got him and I quickly sent the vermin to opossum hell with a hatchet. One less fig stealer in the world is a good thing!
Good job Gene! They prefer the chickens at my house but still meet the same fate.Straight to the bone orchard!
I have coons in my backyard! the other night i threw a bucket of water at them, then they started hissing at me. It was a family of 3. My coward dog "olaf" - west highland terrier, was afraid to go outside and bark at them, useless canine.
I been seeing rabbit in my field but I guess they can live since they are too short. But winter time they will be in a warm pot.
Ha, ha. My tally so far this season is 2 raccoons, 2 possums, and 8 woodchucks. I haven't even started targeting squirrels yet.But that's the only wait to get the fruit ripe and on your table.
2 down. Another tree rat never show up anymore. My 2 dogs got a bonus for dinner the same evening.

I bagged 10 new figs the day before yesterday. Getting home from work last night I found everyone of those bags, and their fig, destroyed. Damn critters! I swear they are looking for the bags now! My problem is much worse than last year (I also have many more trees.....). I haven't gotten a really ripe fig in weeks.Did I mention that the little thieves took every one of the figs off my Panache in one night! I missed tasting this fig for the first time this summer. I will have to wait for next year now.
Having critter problems here too. Beginning to consider putting some 4' high chicken wire around a row of trees and affixing a solar charger to it. Don't think woodchucks, possums and raccoons are likely to jump the fence and hoping that a good shock will dampen their enthusiasm for my trees. Most of the time I appreciate my possums because they dine on ticks and other bugs and we have those aplenty here. Raccoons are another story as are the woodchucks. Wood not miss them at all.
