Beautiful trees Martin. Does anyone else think his fig trees "see" what happens to non producing trees in Martin's yard? They are scared not to produce.

That looks great. I see you don't use a long fibered sphagnum, but what looks like a soil mix. How is it doing now that it is detatched? I've been experiencing lots of wilt with my airlayers when I remove them. I know that is usually an indicator of not enough roots, but I am seeing lots of roots when I remove them. Pretty much what I have been doing in the past, but don't recall as much wilting.

Nice air layer, but how disappointing that all the previous photos have been removed.

Barry its doing well so far , just out in yard again and gave it a quick look. Usually i don't cut airlayer at 11:30 am but temps are 72 at 1:30pm and should go no higher than 75 so it should be ok. Tonight in the 50s. No i don't use sp just my own mix i make up , anything damp against a branch with patience and it will produce roots and reason why i dont scrape the branch but whatever works for one i say keep at it. ; )

Thanks Martin. I too love looking at pictures. :) Right now I'm very interested in everything about air layers. I was just outside looking at what figs I have that are large enough to set something up. Cuttings on the hoof, so to speak.

So are you saying air temps should be cooler when you cut them off? That would explain my wilting as each time I've cut any off this year it has been hot, over 90.

Same thing is good to do when transplanting a growing plant into "the field". Other things to avoid are wind and bright sun, if it is going to rain then that is perfect. It actually makes a huge difference with a really tender plant like lettuce which loses leaves from wilting fast.

What do you think about cutting the air-layer off in the evening when the sun goes down?
