Container covers

Hi
I sometimes see people have a black cover over container figs at base of plant.
Why is this?
Thanks

just like any other mulch:
helps retain moisture (humidity)
warms the root zone
repels pests
repels weeds

that's what I always assumed, anyway...maybe I'm wrong

If it's going to be super rainy, it can also control how much moisture gets in the pot in order to avoid splitting. No access to soil=no fungus gnats.

If it's going to be super rainy, your soil could be washed out. All your fertilizer gone with the flush ( rain) .
People would cover the pots to avoid this washing of the nutrients in the pot.
But:
I always thought that the roots could suffocate from lack of air exchange at the roots/potting medium and from constant humidity. IMO, roots need to dry a bit every now and then.
Those kind of setups always reminded me of a pressure cooker ... I don't want to cook the roots ...
Potting medium in the dark tend to develop moisture (white airy lines) /mushrooms - and that's not good for the roots IMO .
I never cover my pots. But I admit that only have a few, and here the weather is not that rainy.
If you were in a place with daily rains ... You should probably try and do something to keep some water out of the dirt of the pots.

My humidity here is very high and weather at present very hot 35c
Just past also is the "rainy season
I put on white covers , cut plastic bags ,mostly to prevent the soil from drying out as it does very fast.
I have my containers on a drip system
