Hi I am Mike Hughes, Macmike. Mac because I use a Macbook Pro for a computer and Mike for my first name. I am a full time minister. Also a Computer Game Designer as well as an IT engineer. I recently moved into an old farm house with a lot of land or more than I had in the city so I have some room. I have planted this year - Blueberries, 5 different varieties, Blackberries, 3 different varieties, Strawberries, Goji berries and one lone Chicago Hardy fig I bought at Lowe's for $2.00. I am looking for some cold hardy cuttings. I know someone said us newbies needed to wait a couple of years to get any cuttings. I certainly understand that. Don't want to take and no give. I have no advice on fig growing since I don't have experience on that. But want to. I am in Zone 5, 50 miles south of Chicago in Manteno, IL. I preach for the Manteno church of Christ. If you wish to share some of your winter prunnings I can try my hand at rooting next spring would be very grateful. If not I understand. Someone told me I need to get a Turkey fig and a Black Mission again I don't know much about fig varieties but willing to try anything. There is no such thing as a "turkey fig". There is "Brown Turkey", which is widely regarded as one of the worst tasting figs of all time. There are all kinds of trees with "Brown Turkey" in the name, some are decent. Good luck! __________________ Jason Atlanta/Grant Park area - z8

MacMike, Not sure who said new members should wait years to ask for cuttings, but I am not of that sentiment and there are others that feel as I do. The only thing I ask is that new members not use this forum as a place to get free/cheap material and then run off with their haul. Participate and share your experiences so we may all learn from each other. Technology gives us opportunities to learn that the old (and gone) fig experts such as Condit and Eisen never had. I have a few recently rooted cuttings I could share with you if you are interested. PM me and I will let you know what they are and you can research if they sound good to you. Welcome Mike! Your new farm sounds like a great place to experiment with figs and anything else that captures your imagination. One thing you might consider would be to check with neighbors about what fig trees they grow, and keep your eyes open for others as you drive around. Many people are happy to share cuttings or suckers from their own trees, and since the varieties are already thriving in your location you can get good information from the owners regarding the type of care and winter protection they need. __________________ Ken Tucson, Arizona Zone 8b
