* * All gone as of 3:15 pm EST 11/13/15.  Thanks.

Hello everyone.  These cuttings were taken from a fig tree that was affected by Superstorm Sandy.  It is located in the yard of a house that is the first house off the beach on a block in the southern part of Staten Island, NY.  The 15 foot (or taller) tree was completely under water the night that Superstorm Sandy hit.  The owner of the tree was displaced and has not returned.  Many houses that surrounded the tree were erased from their foundations due to the crashing waves.  The owners' house has since been demolished and removed.  Very sad.

I was unable to reach the owners, or they understandably chose not to return my calls.  I did speak with a cousin to the owner that said the tree was an heirloom from (Italy) 'the old country'.  Didn't know what type of fig and didn't remember the color.  The cousin said that it wouldn't be a problem if I pruned the tree.

The tree is located down the block from my own home and I have been watching it since the storm.  It came back last year but was not healthy.  Suckers grew from the roots this year and looked healthier.  I removed some of the dead stuff and pruned some of the suckers off, leaving the healthiest looking ones.  I'll go back during the winter and prune more of the dead stuff off a little at a time until there's a healthy tree left.

So here they are.  Nice sized cuttings and they look very viable!  Don't know what type of fig or the color.  The tree was an heirloom and nice enough to keep for the owners of the property.  $5 for a package of 4-6 cuttings.  Includes postage.  There should be enough to go around.  PM with your address if interested.  PayPal $5 to danny@nycfigs.com.  Please send PayPal to 'Friends and Family'.  Will ship starting on Monday 11/16.

Google Street View of the house affected by the storm and the fig tree looking between wrecked houses from the next block over.  These are from right after the storm but pulled from Google last year.

Good afternoon everyone!

All the packages went out yesterday except for one.  Someone paid and did not give me a shipping address.  There's no indication as to who it is on the forum.  I emailed but no response.

Don't have a name for this one.  It's recorded as DG#7 in my own collection.

Let me know when the packages start arriving.  Enjoy!

Danny,

Any chance you found out where in Italy this tree came from?

Wow!  Congrats on the roots already.

If I run into the cousin again I'll ask if she know where in Italy the tree is from.

Any updates on the mother tree (where its from, suspected varitiey or picture of fruit)? My cuttings are rooting nicely, very vigorous grower :). How are other people cutting fairing? I love heirloom varieties and i am very excited to see how this one turns out.

No updates on variety or what part of Italy the tree is from.  I walked by today and checked the branches.  They are soft and the buds look like they're swelling.

I'm getting good reports from everyone on this variety.  It definitely wants to live!

I'll post some pics after I prune the dead stuff off in a few weeks.

Hello everyone!  Went back the other day to prune more dead stuff and see about a breba crop.  Found the tree dead.  Someone had sprayed 'ground clear' to kill the weeds and it killed everything.  There is one live 10" shoot in the middle of the tangled mess of black dead shoots and roots.  Stood there looking at it for a while.  Very sad.  :(  If you are currently growing this heirloom I'd like to see some pics of it.  If anyone has an extra one growing I'd like to purchase it as I accidentally froze my own cuttings and they are no longer viable.

Hi Danny sorry I'm a newbie with cuttings and I smothered them with too much affection that they rotted... hopefully someone has an extra to give back to you

I want to say sorry as well.  I lost mine, after they began showing plenty of signs of roots and growth.  I didn't have have the right lighting and space for the cuttings, and where I put them they didn't take.  Anyone have good results with this these cuttings?
