Another beautiful fig.

Hi,
Do you have that strain ?
Could you take pics of the leaves at least ?
It seems to be a big fig !

Nice. Is that a pons fig ?

Figgyme,

I have that cultivar (at least i bought it as such). It didn't produce yet, so i wasn't able to confirm it.

Can you please show the full 2 pages of that book where that cultivar is mentioned, so i can read the full text (in the first and second photo). I would appreciate it.
I can try and translate the text for all if there is an interest.

Thanks,

A few photos of the leaves of my small tree.
The leaves are already turning yellow and falling. The tree is in a very bad spot that has lots of clay and is struggling to grow.
It seemed a bit better this year. A lot stronger growth. It seems to be adapting, but the figs didn't ripe.
There are still some small figs in the tree, that appeared later due to the unusual long and dry summer we are having.
Edit- some better photos. First photo, the tree in this spring, the others now:

I also have 2 small plants in pots (air layers i took from the original tree).

I hope those who have this variety can confirm that the leaves are similar.

This is Rei from Tom

Thanks for the video, Figgyme.

The leaves seem similar to me. The second crop of figs not so much, but that can be due to different conditions. I will have to wait and see next year.

By the way - The right pronunciation is RR (ei) not R (ie).  A hard R at the beginning, like the sound you would make when you are clearing your throat between your teeth (not and open AR, like its pronounced in english) and an open EI at the end, like when you are calling someone. It means King (Rei) Fig. In spanish "De Rey" has the meaning "a Fig for a King"

Can you tell me the name of the book?

Thanks,

You can buy this book online sir

Thanks for the link, Figgyme. Probably its full of descriptions of spanish varieties i don't have but information about figs it's always interesting reading. I am going to buy it.

By the way, no need to be so formal. Unless i have done something to annoy you (like asking you to digitalize the information on Figo Rei :-).
In that case i apologize.

Thanks again for the info.

My sources indicate its an excellent fig.

Congrats for the ones that grow this.

With the warm weather of September and mid-October this fig tree tried to produce some very late figs that almost made it to full ripeness before the rains that are currently upon us.

With one week of heavy rain they finally splitted and i had to pick them.

To my surprise they had an excellent flavour even with the water damage. I can't wait to try them fully matured next year.

The book finally arrived. Here's the full information about this variety:
Figo_de_Rei_pag1.jpg Figo_de_Rei_pag2.jpg

It's nice to confirm the variety. At least the leaves in the book and in my trees seem identical:

vasos_fig_rei3_folha_livro.jpg

It also checks out the lateness of the second crop. From August to October (due to the difficult conditions that the tree suffered, they appeared very late).
They rate the first crop as Excellent (not many figs in the book have that rating) and they appear in the first week of July. I hope i can taste them next year.

Both crops have very high Brix and they resist well to manipulation because of the firm skin. They are adequate to be consumed fresh, but can also be dried.

The final information states that the tree is not adequate to grow in very dry conditions (as is usually the case in Spain with fig trees - most people don't water them), losing much of the fig quality and size.

Jaime,

How did this fig perform for you this year?

A very nice fig. I like the size.

Any source to get this variety?

Does Harvey have it? :(

I think New England Gardner Had it on eBay month ago...If my memory served me right...his F4F handle id TMC2009

Ray,

Sorry for the late reply but i missed this thread and your question.

I took several cuttings to send friends and i also did several airlayers in my original tree leaving her with only a central trunk. I did that to give it a better shape and remove the lateral growth and also to obtain a few more trees in pots so i can reposition them in a better location.
As i said before the original tree is in a very bad location with lots of clay and isn't growing well.

The problem with this approach is that i almost did not have fig production for this variety this year.

There were only a few figs in the tree but i as i didn't protect them they were all eaten by birds (the tree is a bit isolated and the effect of my bird scarers doesn't reach that far)

I am curious to compare my Rei with a couple of De Rey that i received from Spanish friends. I am not 100% certain they are the same. Maybe next year i have more information about the variety to share.

There are 2-3 nursery sell this variety in Spain.

I bought from 2 of them. and one is correct variety.

I suggest you to buy from Rosa. from Hernaderona farm.
