I've got to start checking the weather more closely. Deep freeze (into the 20s) not only for NJ but much of New England and the Mid Atlantic states. I still have a couple of figs in a sunny, protected spot...but temps of 25-26 degrees won't be good for them. Hopefully other folks won't get caught off guard.

Sadly, I knew about the weather forecast and still didn't manage to get my in ground figs protected. Life got too busy. I never managed to buy tarps. I'll be viewing this as the first cold hardiness test of my plants.

It isn't just New England and the mid Atlantic the forecast low for central Florida is 29 tonight............ lucky for me i'm on a lake and it should buffer it some but I am still guessing 33 and that is damn cold for us in November.

The funny thing is, as I was moving my last few remaining pots inside, it occurred to me that I DID know it was supposed to get cold. I saw the long term forecast at the end of last week and spent time over the weekend prepping my storage area! But somehow between Saturday and Monday I forgot! (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!!!! ;-) I mean, I moved most of my figs on Saturday, but I left some of the hardier ones out...

Like WillsC said, it's not just the northeast and mid atlantic looking at freezing temps. It is 9 degrees here in SW Missouri right now. Brrrrrrr!!! Figs in the garage and temp in there is 37 degrees.

I spent most of the weekend protecting in-ground trees and moving my containers into the garage. Unfortunately I only got (at best) half of my in-ground trees properly protected. So last night I bought more tarps and did a quick and dirty winter protection on some additional ones. The ones that weren't protected at all are Mt Etnas, Malta Black, SalsC types, and a Dalmatie type. They tend to be good sized with around 2 inch in diameter trunks so hopefully they will be ok. My concern is that they aren't fully dormant though and will experience more damage because of this.

It feels like the beginning of a new ice age. 13F last night with a lot of wind. I got all but 4 trees into the garage and none of the in ground trees covered.

Was doing the fig shuffle last night in the rain. And the dark. Supposed to go down to the mid-20's tonight. Fingers crossed for my 2 old unprotected inground trees.

All of my trees are in ground including my TC trees bought in May and cuttings rooted earlier in the year. Most of the varieties are just going dormant, but I have already had some tips get cold fried on my mission. Should I cut the frost burned parts off or wait until spring? I am a bit concerned about rot. Last year my hardy Chicago had some tips do the same thing when it got down to 5° and come spring I just snipped those parts off after the trees started growing.

Rich,CdD B figs happen to have flat stems? Like if you took a round stem and squeezed it between your thumb and fingers until it was flatter...like twice as high as they are wide??

My one in ground fig and a few other fruiting plants were covered a few days ago. plant pots over top and leaves covering them fenced in with chicken wire. 15 degrees now, 60 this weekend....

It was -7F here yesterday morning still have my colasanti #3 inground that has not been protected yet oops poor thing gets blasted every year and never dies. Lets hope it makes it through this time

Luckily the weather service was WAY off. I'm on a lake and there are more lakes to my north and generally get a couple of degree buffer in temps but our low last night was forecasted to be 29 and ended up just dropping to 36.2. Now tonight they are calling for 32 so we shall see. Thankfully will be back up to more seasonable temps by the weekend, 80ish.

Yeah, right Igor. I'm man enough to handle drought, fires, and earthquakes, but not sure I could take NE winters. Found that photo in an article about yesterday's 6' of snow in NY.

So true Gary, I moved to Florida Oct. 1976 because I lost the battle with snow in NH, and Jan. 1977 we received a light snow flurry in Labelle FL (zone 9b/10a), first and only time this has happened. I think it was a message for me.
