Black Madeira is a great dark fig that needs long hot summers.

I agree, Black Madeira or Figo Preto would be good choices for your part of the country. You could consider Col de Dame Noir also. You might want to check out posts from other growers from the southwest (e.g. FrozenJoe) to see what does well in your area i.e. figs that like it hot and dry. You are not limited on season length so you have that going for you.

I've heard Negretta described as a fig which is well adapted to hot, dry and rocky locations.

I called the supplier that I got my previous tree from and he said that he has a Black Mission, Violet de Bordeaux, and Texas Blue Giant. I think the last two might be interesting. Any thoughts on those?

VdB is a good choice of the three... If you can get your hands on a Black Madeira it is "so good it'll make you cry" good ... if you have the heat...which you do...

I've had a few fig trees here in Tucson now for 3 years. I have a Panache planted in ground, and like your experience, mine is the most vigorous and productive tree I have. I have VdB in ground that is also very vigorous and productive. It grows wider and shorter than Panache. I have a Black Madeira in a sip and it is a productive tree for it's size but grows very slow. I have a couple RdB in containers, they grow tall but sparse and aren't big producers. I have a Vista in a container and it seems to match my VdB in all aspects. I have a Hardy Chicago in container that is doing very well, productive but the fruit are small. Not a dark fig, but I have an Adriatic JH planted in ground that is struggling, I may replace it. Overall, from my very limited experience, I would recommend VdB/Vista. The fruit is fantastic and my tree does really well with the local climate. My only negative observation is that it is always a thirsty tree and seems to need extra water. I also have had the best luck with transplanting into the ground in the fall, generally late Oct/ early Nov.

I like VDB, but its a berry flavor. So I would get a Black Mission. It has a caramel flavor when fully ripe. Kadota is a big hit with family and friends, it can get very sweet with its Honey Flavor.

Thank you all for the advice. FrozenJoe is going to give me some tips on my tree when I start to prune for the winter. I will post up if I have a few cuttings to pass on. This is a great community. Here is a picture of my tree after 2 seasons.

My tree is still full of leaves, so I haven't made any cuts, but I did get a few cuttings from Frozen Joe (VdB). Here is a pic of some new growth. This is my first attempt at cuttings, so we will see what happens. The pic was taken right after I watered the cups, so I have not emptied the collection tray. Don't be alarmed. they are not left in the stagnant water.

I hope they root for you Aaron. Thanks for the Panachee cuttings. Your Panachee tree looks very healthy.
