What would you say if I asked you what the most desirable fig is?

   In my opinion, it is the cultivar that you find to offer incredible taste, and that is consistently productive in your location without splitting or souring.  So,  it necessarily will be different for nearly everyone.

   ...And, I suppose that it should be all but unobtainable for you to be able to acquire it;  thus, it maintains its mystique, and "desirability".

I think that is true. A fig you see, you want, but can't get. Right now I'm trying to figure out what this variety purchased at a french farmers market is called... It looks perfect....

I am a total newbie to figs :)

Any of the figs in your growing list could be the one for you. 

You will find one of them will grow best for you & you will learn to pick the fig at just the right time so it tastes perfect.

I have rather gone completely overboard, as is my wont, with the amount I have ordered. I still have another thirty or so cuttings on their way - I think it's seven different types lol. The only one that I have trouble finding is Hardy Chicago but I will hunt one down in the end.

Subjective. The ones I enjoy the most are the most desirable.

Chicago Hardy is pretty common in my experience. You can certainly find cuttings around. PM me into the season and I can help you. However, I've found that many good garden centers carry them if you want a more mature tree that will bear fruit for you more quickly. Lots of growers will ship to you as well...

It's not that common in Europe. The only source over here is Baud nurseries. I got a HC but I think MBVS would be a better choice due to the vigour and productivity. I never really bothered to acquire MBVS , so if anyone got it for me from the colder parts of the US or Canada then I will have some pretty good varities for trade.

Interesting. I'd not even considered that given that the true origins are European. Mind you I doubt anyone in Sicily would recognize the name.

When trimming time comes I'm more than happy to mail cuttings to anyone who asks....I have a number of them on the go. Right now my largest tree is a CH. It was also my first fig tree.

Get a "Bellone" fig. It has been a superb fig for my zone

Yes they call it Mt Etna types, I will be sending HC cuttings over to you . They root pretty well. I also got Red Lebanese Bekka, which looks like another HC type. If I add another one then that would be an MBVS.
