My three year old chicago hardy fig did not apparently survive the tough NY winter. The branches turned a deep cooper color and are brittle and dead. I do see some green at the roots and maybe some green buds a few inches from roots so I assume it will re grow. My question is should I cut all the branches to ground or to where I see some green? Any chance I could stll get some fruit this year? Thanks! __________________ Barry

I would wait a bit. Sometimes these trees are very slow to break dormancy. And it can vary from year to year. You will lose nothing by waiting another month, and you have a lot to gain. And, as I recall, my Chicago Hardy was the last to break dormancy last year. I would definitely give it some more time. __________________ Dave Verde Valley, AZ Zone 8

You may slowly cut little by little to get dead branches off and see what your left with. I read somewhere that if its red its dead. With my HC that does seem to be the case. Last year it didnt throw new shoots until sometime in June. If you scratch just underneath the outer bark and see that the cambium is brown rather than green then that wood is dead and it is not coming back. If you leave dead wood on this far into Spring it can encourage wood boring insects to set up shop. I cut the dead wood off of mine about a month ago and will probably do another round of trimming before long. __________________ Steve MD zone 7a
