eBay.co.uk/Amazon.co.uk Sellers

I was searching the forum for info on UK or EU sellers on eBay.co.uk/Amazon .co.uk sites. The topics covering eBay before are a great resource for US members but couldn't find much to help me there.

I only recently started looking to build up my collection, thanks to some recent free money(birthday, woohoo!) I want to get as many known varieties as possible with limited cash, and want to make sure what I am getting is,to the best of my knowledge, true to name.

Most elements of the eBay debate have been covered in other topics so not looking for a repeat here, also not much interest in the postage/packing/customer service side as that's usually covered in their feedback.Im just looking for some guidance for me and hopefully for this topic to act as a resource for others to come after looking for the same info.

Also happy to throw this open to all put US brothers and sisters, there are several US based sellers selling cuttings into the UK(just search fig cuttings on the eBay.co.uk site).

Please share if you can which sellers people have used, how healthy plants/cuttings were and whether they are true to type

There are few good sellers on eBay. I don't usually buy from eBay after many bad experiences . I don't buy much from UK either mainly because the nurseries don't care about figs over here.

From the uk :
There are few nurseries that sell decent varieties.
RV Rogers , Keepers Nursery, Reads Nursery, Blackmoor Nursery, Lubera, Deacons Nursery

From Europe,
Plenty of sources, you can also get real varieties with their real name (non English names). As there are no Figs originated from English speaking countries .
Montserrat Pons, Baud Nurseries will ship to the uk.

From the US:
Almost all the Figs in the US other that the LSU figs are possibly from Europe. If you want an instant collection , then it's better to wait till January and buy cuttings from the most trusted source "Figaholics" ( Harvey).

Vinny I,thank you for the comprehensive response,I have already been poring over the sites for some of the nurseries you mention for a while, will have to check out the others and do more window shopping!.I completely agree with your comment about UK nurseries not caring about figs, they seem to be included for the sake of completeness in most cases(well we have every other fruit ,better get in some Brown Turkey),it's sad considering the length of time figs have been here that there isn't "fig culture" here like there is with apples or plums or pears. Will Definately be following up he leads you have given, very much appreciated

I have bought a few from jurassic plants on ebay. Only small plants, 9cm pots, but healthy and very good root systems. Well packaged too, so far nothing has been damaged in transit. However, I am too new to figs to be able to verify if the varieties they sell are true to name.

eBay seller report.-hotplantcompany

I bought 3 figs in 9cm pots from this seller over a week ago, they arrived today and I got back and was like 'yay goodies',rushed to the kitchen and opened the boy to see what State they were in.

Packaging was ok,the plants were taped into the pots to stop soil falling out(cling film would have worked better) and then wrapped and packed out with newspaper, not totally professional but guessing this is a small operation. They also have a website hotplantcompany.co.uk and sell numerous things, not just figs.

The plants themselves seem healthy, mostly just a whip, some of the new growth is already lignified so they appear to be in their second year.

Plants are pot bound and the leaves look pale and wilty, could be down to lack of fertiliser, being pot bound, being stuck in a box for days,or a combination of all 3.

Have potted up to a 15l pot today, put plenty of fertiliser in the soil and watered in,the leaves should recover well and expect them to be fine.Overall pretty happy with the plants, could have been better but could have been worse and for the money I paid for them, about £7 each including postage, they are pretty good.

On the downside, postage,I ordered over a week ago, didn't get s dispatch confirmation on eBay until I chased on Tueaday this week and they arrived by 48hr delivery today,on Friday?,I'm just glad the plants weren't sitting in a van or warehouse somewhere for the last 10 days.

Good to see your figlet princess helping. My kids have always loved plants and still do now that they are grown up!

The plants don't look bad at all. As you say probably being in the box has scrunched them up. Seems like good value. I wondered about buying from that company too.

My jurassic plants figs are still the healthiest of any that I have bought. I have a couple from Reads which are still very yellow leaved, probably because they were extremely pot bound when they arrived. They still haven't responded to my emails.

Deacons Nursery is another that I might try. They were quite helpful when I asked questions about size of plants, etc.

Disappointed in Reads.Deacons has a good little range by the looks of it,always overlooked them in the past due to their website not working well on my iPhone.I had an extremely pot bound yellow leafed Brown Turkey stick(my first fig tree),I up potted it,pinched the terminal bud and fertilised it heavily and it has burst new side buds,3 from the lowest mode which I hurried which I might air layer, and the leaves have turned thick and green so there is hope. These 3 trees I bought are all very pot bound but after my experience with my BT I'm confident they will be ok.

I've heard http://www.gb-online.co.uk/prestashop/category.php?id_category=118 are good, only in relation to apples and root stocks, but hopefully if they can get that right their figs should be ok,they have a good range, many out of stock at the moment though,I might try them this winter.

I'll keep reporting back on any further experiences online, hopefully you and other folks will find it useful

In my quest for Michurinska 10, I was recently pointed in the direction of this Bulgarian site: http://palmi.bg/en/search.html?phrase=Fig&x=0&y=0

I am guessing you asked the same person the same question and got the same reply. The nursery also sells cuttings,I've sent them a message for a list ,when they send out, postage to UK and how many cuttings they can fit in 1 packet.

I'll post a response here.

Have you ordered from them?im very tempted but have not heard Back from my enquiry about UK postage. They do wholesale so I'm tempted to buy a whole bunch figs, all depends on their pricing for ordering multiples. At the moment they are like £4.20 each which is a good retail price but that could soon jump up if postage is factored in

No, I haven't ordered yet. I had thought that I would order cuttings too, I guessed that postage on plants might be too costly. I hope that you get a reply. I haven't found anywhere else to get Michurinska 10, so if I just got that I would be happy.

You can trust them, Donov the owner of the nurses is a great guy and I've know him for couple of years. He's a botanist and does lots of rescerch about tropical plants . I think the delivery I paid was about £30 or £40 but that was for a bunch of fig trees plus other citrus plants . Most of their trees are tissue culture from Italy.

That's good to know, thank you!

Cheers Vinny, good to know they are very well priced, even with postage,I'll probably place an order with them at some point, worked out the most economical way for 'small' orders was to order 15 at once so I might get some to keep and some to sell on,m provided they don't arrive flattened(the Palmi site forewarns on that point,at least they are honest!)
