Bought this plant from edible landscaping in 2010 don't really remember if it ever fruited before this was tossed to the side as I was chasing fancy named figs. It resembles Celeste and tastes allot like Celeste is it Celeste? It is very hardy

Nelson, It looks more like Celest than my English Brown Turkey.

Hey Akram, yes I agree with you my other English Brown Turkey is a whole other beast. I would never get rid of it. The EBT from Edible landscaping is not a real English brown turkey.

Nelson I just went over this variety earlier today:)  it looks like a fig I call celeste dark. that's not english BT definitely are all or most the figs the same or is this your first one?

It resembles Celeste quite a bit.

Nelson, it reminds me a lot of a "Brown Turkey" I got from Miller Nurseries a few years ago. I'm not sure if its a southern brown turkey, celeste or some kind of hybrid.

the first pics are of the EBT EL and the figs all had that shape and size this one was the darkest one to be honest. The others were a little bit lighter in skin color pulp was the same.

This pic shows the lighter color on the airlayer I did earlier this year.


The Second pics I posted is of another EBT I purchased localy a couple years ago.


Hey Peter, Could this be the same as the Hank Mathies EBT? I Believe miller nurseries used to sell it a while back as did Edible Landscaping.

Nelson, I don't believe so. I remember reading somewhere that they stopped selling it many years ago. But I could be wrong, hopefully someone who has the real English brown Turkey can verify. I'm leaning towards celeste or southern brown turkey

Peter you are right they did stop quite a few years ago.

Daniel yes post#3 real EBT one of my best figs.

Thanks Grant I missed allot last year while I was MIA. I never grew southern BT but had heard it was similar to Celeste. It also had a few breba but only one ripened.

I agree with most others here in this thread who've said:  that isn't real English Brown Turkey.  I compare it with Frank's Fig Unk (a likely strain of English Brown Turkey, and an excellent fig).  I often think that having "brown turkey" in the name is too bad for English Brown Turkey, as it really is an excellent fig in my experience (and its reputation suffers from association with those other "brown turkey" figs).  I'm glad your EBT is still kicking, after all those others you lost this past winter.

Hi Sammy,
I forget which one I gave you.
It might have been Grimo BT or EBT from EL
the leaves are quite similar and so is the fruit size and appearance except for final colour when ripe.
Both are purplish, but the EBT from EL has golden undertones while the Grimo BT is more burgundy.

Great to hear Sam,
While similar in size and appearance the two are different in the way they grow, at least for me they have been.
The Grimo BT has generally ripened earlier for me than the EBT EL which usually starts ripening after about half of the Grimos have ripened.
The Grimo will dry on the tree, making a sweet, tasty and chewy treat. 

The Grimo BT has not needed any pinching to produce. It just puts out 4 or 5 or 6 leaves with short inter-nodal distance usually setting 3 or 4 fruits per branch of new growth.
The EBT tends a bit towards more green growth and I tend to pinch it.
The Grimo has been a more consistent producer. It dropped a few figs this year whereas the EBT dropped all but one,  which is now starting to swell and change colour.
and they are very different tasting figs, the EBT being more of a full tongue taste experience.

Greg in 2011 and 2012 it was left outside in the pot and it survived the winter wil minimal damage. Last winter it was in my dads garage right beside the door the 5 plant next to it all died and this one had no damage at all. The 5 that died were a 5 year old kadota, 4 year old black Marseilles, 4 year old white Marseilles, 5 year old moscatel preto and 4 year old hardy Chicago.

This fig tree below is an unknown. Any idea if it might be Southern Brown Turkey? Or is it a generic Celeste as I had assumed?
