Axier, my father thanks you for having described your process and findings. He is in the same exact situation as you were, and is grateful for your efforts.

I would like to clarify several things. I made this article near 4 years ago, since then, I have learned a bit more about fig grafting:

• Unlike I said in this article, I lately have gotten good results with chip-buds from cuttings stored in the fridge. It is important to choose chip with well formed buds and graft on a hardened green branch of the year. Older wood is worse to graft on, although it is also possible.
  

• It is enough to keep the aluminum foil for 5 to 7 days, no more. Probably 5 days is better than 7. Get rid of direct sun on the graft during the first 5 or 6 weeks!

• I deter from removing the graft covering strip before the 5 week. Don't be in a hurry to do it, except for a very early vigorous sprouting of the bud (unlikely).

One thing I would like to add. I have tried chip budidng and I was successful and the graft grew about 2 ft. However the wind came and broke the branch off. This commonly happens because the shoot can be very vigorous but the graft union takes some time to harden.
I would suggest in that case to either support the shoot with a stick by tighing one end of the stick to the main branch, and the other end to the grafted shoot. The other option is to trim down the new growth.

One of the only two museums on my itenerary for the trip to Spain in May.

I am still debating about going to Dali museum in Figueres.  From Barcelona it's a 2hr train there, 2hr train back ... that ride will be 5% of my entire time to spend!

PS Axier has made some updates but I have not yet updated the PDF.

In the French Website there is this update ( last picture at bottom of the page).. worth looking- securing the water sprouts down, almost like many japanese espaliers.
