Experienced old coon giving me the blues

Hi everyone, this year I have caught and relocated 3 coons
and 2 possoms.I am looking for suggestions now on
other ways to humanely protect my figs from racoons.
The trap Im using is an older model hava heart and they
are destroying it and escaping! Does anyone have
a specific trap they used thats held up and no escape?
I was also considering an electric wire (6" off ground)around the perimeter of my figs next year.Has anyone tryed this?
Thanks,Geno

Havahart traps work. If the raccoons are escaping file the trigger mechanism until you have a "hair trigger". That will catch em. Also if your trap is old make sure that it is mechanically sound.

Fisherman2,check out my pics . There is nothing wrong
with the trigger mechanism . A racoon is destroying the
trap. The animal is bending back the sheet metal tabs
that hold the spring loaded door shut.

It's pretty amazing how strong their jaws are to chew through metal. I had the same problem with the raccoons escaping after being trapped. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and get new traps. I got mine at Tractor Supply.

I'm new to figs but in my garden I put a radio out there and it stopped the thieves cold. I leave it in NPR, a talk station so they think there's someone out there.

Never thought of doing that, pretty good idea .
Maybe set the radio on a timer and keep it low enough
for the neighbors sake.

My newer model HaH works fine.  I bought it a year ago.  Since then I've trapped 5 raccoons, 4 possums, 3 woodchucks, 1 skunk, . . . and a partridge in a pear tree -- basically everything that gets near the figs.

The only problem I had happened when a piece of bait (carrot) rolled under the trigger plate.  But once trapped, nothing has escaped.

I bought the biggest trap I could find.  There is a smaller version that is inadequate for raccoons.
