Ive got 4 bare root trees that are coming in the fall from James Robin. When they get here, considering im in zone 6, what do I do with them? Im sure i have to put them in soil, but then what? Do I water them and then keep them in an unheated garage? Do I not water them to keep them dormant? Do I grow them indoors? Just trying to plan ahead.

I have ordered from Mr Robin in the past and as I recall the trees usually come in November. I pot them, put them by my light stand and grow them in the house for the winter. Don't know if that is really necessary, but I feel better doing this to ensure they will be growing well for the summer. You could probably pot them and keep them cool and dormant too.

I will pot them and water them then put in garage over winter, be sure that soil stay slightly damp all the time but not to wet other wise roots will rot . If soil dry tree will died.

I water my dormant trees once a month last year I have over 100 trees at various stages in pots from 1 gal to 35 gal. I gave each 1 gal tree about 6-8 ounces of water once a month usually in the first week of each month, they all survived.. of course the 35 gal tree received a little bit more but same schedule.. I have been doing this for 4 years and have not lost a tree.
