These are a friend's figs planted as hedges. They do have beautiful leaves and they grow unprotected in Zone 7a.
Yes, I think the leaves are the ones considered as 'ice crystals'.
He haven't tried the fruit since they did not ripen on time last year. He hopes that some would ripen this year.

Another 7a. There's quite a few of us here, we can have a fig tasting In The fall, if we get lucky with the crops
