I purchased a ficus gasparriniana var. laceratifolia from Plant Delights Nursery this past spring. They call named it the Christmas Fig and said it will ripen fruit by the end of the season but that the fruit are not that edible. All of that is true. They also said that it will make seeds that can be planted, apparently in the absence of a pollinator. Not sure about that but they claim their plants were propagated from seeds collected from their "mother" plant.

The fig is found along forest trails at 600 to 1300 meters elevation in Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan [Bhutan, Myanmar]. The species proper is found between 500 and 2000 meters elevation in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunan [Bhutan, NE India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam]
My plant did grow and is loaded with small fruit. Just thought I would pass this along in case anyone runs across this fig.

When they say "not that edible" exactly what does that mean?

Not really edible means that it tastes like eating a "leaf." There is not any sweet taste. Perhaps if there was more heat at this time of year, there could be a change. There are also some crunchy seeds inside.
I'll try to remember to get another picture of the whole plant. Right now it is probably under 2 feet tall.

this old world is getting smaller by the minute.
