I purchased a fig tree at Home Depot several (5?) years back that was labeled as a Black Mission Fig, and have yet to see a black fig on the tree. It took a couple of years to bear fruit, and this summer has prolific fruit. As in years past, I have waited for the fruit to turn black, only to watch it drop to the ground as yellowish green fruit. I assumed it had a disease of some sort, but after seeing a few dozen figs on the ground this week, I decided to determine the cause. After searching this forum, and realizing there were more than just Brown Turkey and Mission figs, I have concluded my tree is NOT a Black Mission fig. I tasted a ripened fig, which has a melon flavor, only to read further on this forum that some figs are not edible. As I haven't yet keeled over or had a violent GI reaction, I can conclude it is also edible. Now, I would like to know what it is. I'm in Augusta, GA and this tree made it through winter temperatures in the teens with little damage. Pictures below. Any ideas? Thanks for your assistance.

My guess would be Kadota but it could be any of the honey figs. None of the Ficus carica have poisonous figs but some are dry and taste like cardboard. __________________ Zone 6, MO Wish list: Galicia Negra, De La Reina - Pons, Genovese Nero - Rafed's, Sbayi, Souadi, Acciano, Any Rimada, Sodus Sicilian, any Bass, Pons or Axier fig, any great tasting fig.

All the HD's in my area only carry 4 varieties, Brown Turkey, Black Mission, Kadota and Panache. I'm sure if you'd went back to see their stock on hand they'll probably have a green fig and most likely it'll be the same as yours. Your fig looks like my Kadota. Hi brownmic86, Welcome to the forum. When ficus carica is not edible, you know it; they just look like something you're not going to eat. I'll post a pic later of one I tried to try yesterday. It must be a caprifig as squishing it I had powder coming out of the eye of the fig. I opened them all, and no no, I don't give that a try. The skin looked edible, and I tried it, but it was just like trying cardboard. That tree is now on the compost pile. I just need the roots to come of ... I have a free spot for one of my potted trees ... ! YES ! __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here
