Hi, The last winter was mild here. Some figs stayed hanging on some trees. On one of my unknown, I had noticed a web in between the trunk and a fruit. Removed it 3 times, but it kept on coming back. I couldn't understand where the source of the silk was . That fig looked odd and I decided to remove it. I then saw a hole where the fig was touching the trunk of the tree. I crushed the fig, and saw I had crushed the culprit: a caterpillar ! So I found the hide of the culprit. Notice the caterpillar has eaten all the flesh of the fig . I'm checking the other figs. But so far so good - no other critter was found . So watch out if you see a web on your figtrees ! __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here

jd, now be honest, have you imported any cuttings from China or any Far East countries? LOL you better find out what kind of caterpillar that was...for your own good. I would be very scared if I were you my friend :)

Hi Aaron4usa, Here during winter every caterpillar will seek an hide. Normally they go in between dead wood or plastic pots. I had once 3 caterpillars wintering in between pots, so to be honest they don't scare at all. Normally I don't kill them, but that one just started a bad habit - and it could have produced a strain of caterpillars with that bad habit . So, it was sentenced to not winter safely ! As I already have written, this winter here was mild, and normally all figs go toast to the cold temps, so they can't be used as hides. In fact I almost found that scene funny ... But even with caterpillars too much is too much and so I need to get rid of them. I already have birds hanging around and doing part of the job, so I'm not that much concerned about that little problem. But now of course, I'm checking every week and knocking each bad looking fig as soon as I spot it, which is just normal house keeping. __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here
