Fig Plantation in India

Dear Admin/senior members

It's good to join Fig forum and really helpful.

I am planning to do 4 acres fig planation in South India, and Bellary/Poona is most popular fig verities in India.

Need to know the plantation details like , opening the pit, size of pit, what fertilizer to be given in the, and what are all the detail dosage etc, it is nothing but complete planation details to grow best yield.

Request admin/senior member to help.

Thanks

Raj

Hi Raj,

Welcome to the forum. What are you currently growing?

Houston Fig

Raj,welcome to the forum,I hope some one will be able to help.My growing conditions are probably very different from yours so my experiences would not be much help, also all of my trees are in pots not in ground.

There are some articles online specifically about cultivation in India(e.g:http://vikaspedia.in/agriculture/crop-production/package-of-practices/fruits-1/fig) but I am sure you can learn some useful things here as well from people with lots of 1-on1 experience with their trees.

Another major difference will be availability of varieties, many varieties featured here may not be available in India, just as many Indian varieties are not avaliable in the US or Europe.

Where in south India are you planning to make a nursery?

Hi haslamhulme,

In South India, place called Bagalkot, there we are planning to make the plantation.

Regards

Hi Houston,

Currently we are growing Peanuts, chillies etc..

Regards

This sounds really interesting. I was on some tours that went through the southern part of Karnataka but we never went as far North as Bagalkot. I was looking at this climate report for Bagalkot (https://en.climate-data.org/location/51062/) and your rain pattern seems to be the opposite of what we have here in Southern California -wet summers and dry winters. Your temperatures are all above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I wonder which fig varieties will do well there without a winter chill and a wet ripening period. Possibly the LSU varieties or trees that do well in South Florida here in the US?  What are the laws in India for receiving fig cuttings from other countries for rooting? I remember reading a report from some university in India that was researching new fig varieties to grow in India, but I forget where on the Internet that was. Best of luck with your plans.

Brown Turkey hybrids do well in warm climates. Some can produce fruit in the 150-200 gram range.

Welcome!  It will be hard for those of us in the states to give specific recommendations because our products are all different here.  What's your soil like?  What kind of bulk amendments can you get?  Are you able to build a large greenhouse?  Your best advice may come from other tropical growers because most figs don't taste great if they ripen during monsoon season.  Try some of these groups.  Feel free to ask us specific questions.  Figs will rot if their roots are under water for long periods of time so knowing how shallow your water table is during your rainy season will help you know how to plant.  Figs love to be on river banks but not submerged for long periods of time.
