Fig softening and ripening

Hi everyone,

I have an inherited tree of unknown variety, growing well in a 24" pot, in zone 6. One of my figs has gotten soft on the tree and looked ready to swell, but instead stayed there and fell off. Cutting it open, it's white, hollow and relatively dry inside (see pictures below). This is the first fig to get near ripe so I can't speak for whether this is normal. Thoughts? It may be a caprifig, I'm not sure.

It's been getting 1-2 gallons/day in high heat, 1 gallon on mild days. I've lightly fertilized with a low nitrogen fertilizer (10-10-10) once in spring and once in summer.

Hi,
That fig is not ripe, so no conclusion can be made. The tree gave up on that fig. It could be from stress, tree root-bound or from lack of pollination.
Since when do you own the tree ? first year with you ?
What did the source say about that tree ? Was it used as a decorative plant ? Or producing figs ?
Do you have a better picture of the leaf ?

This is my first year with the tree, inherited from my late uncle in Zone 7.  It was one of four that he kept in pots outside (inside during winter).  Not decorative, but I don't know if it fruited for him.  Upon receiving it late last summer it was very root-bound in a 3 gallon pot, so I immediately planted into a 24" pot.  It wintered inside and this spring it really seemed to jump.  I pinched to 6 leaves in mid-July.  In late July it went ~1 week without water - leaves started sagging a bit and a few leaves went yellow (it was supposed to get watered while I was away, but apparently didn't).  It perked back up with heavy watering.  Soon afterwards that specific fruit started softening.  There are ~60 figs on the tree that look healthy and are still quite firm.  A second one has just started to soften.

A picture of the full tree and zoom in on leaf is shown below.  Tree is ~5' tall from base of pot.  The leaves have been very slightly curled up all summer, not sure why.

Your tree looks very healthy. But those figs have a long way to go before they ripen, you need to be patient and let them hang.

Leaves look like English Brown Turkey.
