I went to a restaurant in Cambridge, a suburb of Boston a couple of weeks ago and found a parking spot a half a block away. As I was walking towards the restaurant I noticed a tree about twelve feet tall in the yard of a house right behind the restaurant. It looked like it had pears on it but as I got closer I found out it was figs and not pears. They looked so delicious and knowing that there are fig trees in New England growing in the ground that are close to twelve feet tall gives me hope that I might one day have one in my yard.

Nice! Do you remember the street names? I will be visiting Cambridge before Christmas, could stop by and have a look. I've never seen street figs in Boston, just curious. 

I love cold hardy figs. Could you get me some cuttings if you can? I saw three grand ole fig trees in Provincetown this summer. I am going to write a letter to owner as he wasnt there and see if I can get some cuttings from it. It must do well in cold climates as Provincetown had very cold summers for figs, but is milder than the intior parts of new england. But interior new england gets so much more heat

Swizzle, if you happen to go back by this winter it would be interesting to see if they protect it.  At 12' I'm guessing no, but if they do I'd love to see a picture of that!

Oh, and if you do get cuttings think of me!

The tree is in the yard of the house behind Koreana restaurant. It is at 154 Prospect St. The house is on Scouting Way. You can't miss the tree. I didn't get a picture because it was raining the day we went there but I will be back there sometime this winter and will see how they winterize the tree. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for posting on this swizzle.  I tried going there with Google Maps roadside shots...dang it, they didn't go down Scouting Way!  It's not the light greenish house (314) right behind the restaurant, is it?  If so, is it the tree up against the house on it's Scouting Way side?  I can't quite tell if it's a fig, the resolution isn't quite good enough to tell!  If that's it, it looks like it might have fingered leaves?

BTW, I see that you're a fellow Mainer...I wonder how many of us are on F4F dreaming of in ground figs here?

It is either the tree is not there (hard to see) or it is not protected.

That is the house in the picture you posted. The fig tree is inside the fence in front of the house. It was loaded with figs and some of them were quite large. The tree has got to be the largest fig trees I have seen in New England. Thank you Greenfig for posting those pictures.

Was fairly close to it today while on a business trip...couldn't get over there, but next time I have to plan a visit in.

Anyone else having trouble posting pictures right now?

This post really had me intrigued.  Sadly, he wraps it up or at least did in the winter of 2013/2014 towards the end of his siding install.

Thanks for all of that info Don...answers to all of my questions.  Really good to know that it's wrapped...I missed that.  Where did you hear that it gets wrapped?

I saw a picture of it burritoed up with what looked like various tarps in a traditional fashion during my internet stalking.  It looks like it was taken shortly after the shots above.  The bay windows hadn't been completed and they were working the other side of the house not visible in the picture.  That doesn't necessarily mean that he wraps it up every year but I suspect that he does.

The internet is a crazy place these days with what you can find.

@donSanders .... You are not kidding! I gave up nude sun bathing in my yard once I realized that Google was doing mapping fly overs.... No point in getting my figs photographed!   :-)
