I have a seedling (birds planted) and I decided to let it grow to see if it makes figs. This year made 4 figs. I picked one today even if it was not fully ripe afraid birds will get to it first and I wanted so bad to try it. What caught my attention when I cut it was the pink flesh. Have you ever seen this?
The taste was very sweet and crunchy.

Congratulations! Amazing how birds pooping can result in so many of us waxing poetic over the prospects of a new variety!

Very nice, i hope it's as good as beautiful, and leaves are also beautiful looking.
Almost all the edible seedlings i found are terrible tasting or too small.
I have a Longue d'août (i think) seedling that show a foliage similar to yours, i will keep it.

Hi Pat,
Thank you for sharing those lovely pictures . Congratulations ! It's a nice fig.
May be it's too late now but if you can,  a simple gravity test of those fig seeds could probably help to get a better idea of the type of fig you have there.
Do you still have that caprifig of a couple of years ago ?

Thank you all. I am very excited to taste them again next year. I have 3 more on the tree but I do not know if they will ripe.

figpig_66   i can not tell much about the taste rather than it was sweet and crunchy from the seeds- which I like

jdsfrance  the tree is like 2y old

figoffrandy sorry no cuttings at this time

lampo  Francisco,I still have in the fridge 1/2 of the fig and i could do a gravity test. I know i have to put the seeds in the water but what's next?.....

I still have the caprifig :-). I got a couple of cutting from another caprifig in the neighborhood and rooted them but they are very small. I also have all the other figs but they did not grow much this year.

Thank you Pat,
Right .. just wash the fresh pulp out and separate the clean seeds
Then put these clean seeds into a small glass with water and observe how they perform..
either float ... or  sink to the bottom of the glass
something like this example where all seeds sank !! yours may or may not sink

tell us what you found. Thanks

Glad to hear that your old caprifig still there. Hope you managed to get its help and ripen your Smyrnas..

Most of the seeds went down but there are some floating
This year all the fig trees made fruits very late so I do not think any will ripe. I have a lot of small figs left on my trees.

Thank you for your prompt answer.
I am a bit intrigued by this partial pollination as it seems that half of the seeds from this small sample are empty (floating). The insect, no doubt, has visited this fruit may be not carrying enough pollen or just a lone wasp.
Also looking through a glass to your fig cutaway, see many long style flowers (female) with seeds as well as a few modified (short style).
Need to see how the remaining fruit on this tree develop. If they ripen please try and get their pictures
Did this tree show any previous fruit ? early Summer..July/Aug ?

Here, this season,  have same problem of late ripening... I would say that in your climate zone , providing rain not excessive, some will ripen.

The seeds that sunk are viable.  They will make new plants.  The seeds that floated won't germinate.

Francisco, I'll keep a close eye on the remaining figs. Pray that the birds and squirrels will leave it alone. They are eating even unripe figs. I just found a couple of unripe Col de Dame Noir 1/2 eaten.  Maybe I'll put a net over them.

No there weren't any other figs before these. I 'll keep a closer look next year. What attracted me from the beginning when I saw it grow was the leaves. This is why I let it grow.

Yes Pat. Agree that you keep that young new tree under observation and to protect its fruit from birds.
It would be nice to have such a promising seedling on your backyard. I shall pray for it to be a good edible fig.
Meanwhile,  I would suggest a look on a topic written back in July..

Thank you Francisco for the info. You are a gold mine of informations.

I went and put an organza bag on 2 of remaining figs. I am curious if they will ripe. They look quite greenish and not plump like the other one.
This year my caprifig just had a few figs and i did not have time to go and check the other caprifig in the neighbourhood and bring more caprifigs like i did last year. I did not bother to make time because most of my trees in July were just starting to show baby figs on them and they were too young for fig wasps.

A beautiful fig!  The only other I have seen with the pink flesh is Raspberry Latte.  It's as if the interior color has maybe stained the flesh or that's just the flesh color, not sure.

The red flesh thing is interesting,in other fruit it is a hereditary trait, probably came from one of the parents, however if it is a recessive trait perhaps neither of the parents will express it.In apples for example the red flesh trait tend to show up in the leaves and bark as well as the fruit,it's quite cool even though we don't know the mechanism, does this fig have pink leaf stems?

This fig is one of the last 2 on the tree.  They were covered with organza bag and we had few days of hard rain. Today when i went to look I saw the fig started to rot. I cut it even if it was not ripe. Here are the pics:

This is the side who started to spoil

I peel the skin and you can see the pink is bleeding to the surface

This was the part who was riper

Didn't think anyone had tasted that dumb fig yet lol. I like the sound of it, but I'm not paying 400$ for a stick with one root and two leaves.

I agree, it is unproven too. It looks a lot like this new fig. RDB went for that much when first introduced, so it will come down no doubt if worthy. I can certainly wait. Well it is a late fig I think?  So not on my radar at all, as my zone is not a good match with late figs.
