The only possible explanation to make this name work would be to call it Figo Ms. Branca/ or Figo Dona Branca, or Figo d. Branca, if that was the name or nick name of such 'lady'.   However, just figo branca is a horrific combination to any Portuguese speaking person.  Such combo is 100% worse than "you is having fun..." LOL.

I'm not very light-skinned at this time of year but my father's mother and her female siblings informally were given the surname of Branca because of their light complexion.  When I visited Madeira in 2004 and visited my father's cousin nobody seemed to know here by her formal surname of Pitta, only Branca.  For some reason, I never heard of my father's male cousin being called Branco, only Pitta.

We who have grown up in the USA are vowels being pronounced particular ways and I don't believe that Estrella (I believe that is the late owner's name, Sue can correct) actually said Branca but that is what Sue understood her to say, similar to when Rui pronounced it to me over the telephone.

I'm certainly not angry about it but think the continued mistake is something that should be stopped and arguments for not making the correction are worse than the original mistake.

You know this probably explains why everyone I know in California says they have white fig trees growing in their yard. Someone's been translating this.

When i see the title of this thread with "Figo Branca", it always makes me cringe...
It's Figo Branco, not Figo Branca, and not Figo Bronco as is suggested as an alternative in the F4F database (sorry, but Bronco means dumb, or stupid - that would be Stupid Fig).
And all this discussion about which is the correct name, and keeping it like that because of the "original source", is just that. Plain stupid.

It would be nice if the owner of the thread could correct it (if that's possible) to reflect the correct phrasing in the language we speak.
And that correction should be extended to F4F database that perpetuates that error and misinforms people.

I understand that who gathered the cuttings from the original tree could have heard the original name incorrectly from the old portuguese lady in Point Loma, particularly when spoken with the Madeira accent (that has a tendency to "drag" some vowels and, in those cases, everything seems to end in "a"), but insisting in the error after several portuguese natives pointed it out, it's just stubbornness and disregard for other cultures.

I completely agree Jsacadura you put it perfectly. I've been making an honest attempt to match genders on my figs so that I don't perpetuate mistakes.
