I have a Preto in a twenty five gallon pot and after total dieback this past spring, as of today ended with three upright stems with no less tha 67" for the center one and three feet for each of the side ones. In addition to all that growth, there are a couple of fruits, that might ripen lay this fall.
It is the tallest tree in this photo.

Sas,how does the preto growth compare to your ucd madeira ?

There are 2 different types of forms I am training the tree to grow in. Tree form single trunk and horizontal stepover. And I also am trying a few Airpots to see if it works any better than regular pots.

Pics are
1 year old Preto in a 25 gal pot and picture of the trunk size. A Preto being trained to grow into a horizontal stepover with rope. Accelerator root pruning pot, with pic of the first fig it produced starting to swell.

I tried many dozen different fertilizer/micros quanities and N-P-K ratios before selection of this one.

Geno, it is hard for me to compare the two since they are grown under different conditions, especially different soil. I could safely say the when compared to other potted trees Preto is one of the fastest growers that I've seen. In Contrast the in ground Black Madeira has been one of the slowest growers of all my trees so far. Considering being planted from the only UCD cutting I had, in clay soil, full sun and unprotected in winter, the fact that it's still alive after four years, it's a win.
One more thing, the size of the Black Madeira figs has been always smaller than the Preto, but unlike the Preto, I never saw one BM split yet. It's perhaps due to a better watering schedule. (It's hard to flood your in ground plants when they sit in 100 degree temperatures during the day). This summer, in addition to all the rain we got, I have the BM daily on 10 minutes 2 gallon per hour drip and it looks happy.
In my humble opinion the UCD Black Madeira and Preto are clearly two different strains.

Sid or SAS,
Would you be willing to sell a Prieto - airlayer to me? I live in San Antonio. I've been wanting a Prieto for a very long time and your post has made me crazy hungry for Prieto Figs.
Thanks!
Vicki
